Since antiquity, humanity has used engineering techniques to manage the transport and distribution of its most important resource - fresh water. Population growth and climate change are making the good management of water resources ever more essential and this book focuses on advanced methods for the control of water flow in open-channel systems. Open-channel hydraulics are described by hyperbolic equations, derived from laws of conservation of mass and momentum, called Saint-Venant equations. In conjunction with hydraulic structure equations these are used to represent the dynamic behavior of water flowing in rivers, irrigation canals, transportation waterways and sewers. A lot of water is wasted because of poor management of such systems and automatic control has long been identified as a possible way to improve their operational management. Building on a detailed analysis of open-channel flow modeling, Modeling and Control of Hydrosystems constructs control design methodologies based on a frequency domain approach. The difficulty involved with rigorous design of boundary controllers for hyperbolic systems is well known but, in practice, many open-channel systems are controlled with classical input-output controllers that are usually poorly tuned. The approach of this book, fashioning pragmatic engineering solutions for the control of open channels is given rigorous mathematical justification. Once the control objectives are clarified, a generic control design method is proposed, first for a canal pool, and then for a whole canal. The methods developed in the book have been validated on several canals of various dimensions, from experimental laboratory canals to a large scale irrigation canal. From the detailed analysis of realistic open-channel flow dynamics, and moving to the design of effective controllers, Modeling and Control of Hydrosystems will be of interest to control and civil engineers, and also to academics from both fields. A set of MATLAB® files are provided (available from www.springer.com/978-1-84882-623-6) so that the interested reader can test the methods developed in the book. L'intérêt principal des canaux d'irrigation est d'assurer une bonne distribution de l'eau aux usagers tout en préservant la ressource en eau. L'automatisation des ouvrages de régulation des canaux a largement contribué à l'amélioration de la gestion de l'eau. La commande automatique d'un canal consiste à agir sur l'ouverture et la fermeture des vannes suivant les données issues des différents instruments de mesures placés sur le canal. Le bon déroulement du processus de commande exige que ces mesures soient fiables. En pratique, ces mesures sont souvent entachées de bruits ou encore d'erreurs. Ces erreurs sont généralement l'effet de défauts dans les capteurs ou actionneurs. Il est par conséquent impératif de munir le canal d'un système de supervision permettant de détecter et de localiser ces défauts.Nous développons dès lors une méthodologie de détection et de localisation des défauts dans les canaux d'irrigation. Cette méthodologie s'appuie sur les techniques de réconciliation de données et de diagnostic à base d'observateurs. La première partie est consacrée à l'application de la réconciliation de données sur un site réel du Canal de Gignac. This work consists of two parts, in the first one, two types of methods are proposed to ensure the observability of non-uniformly observable systems. Firstly methods based on the observability gramian are presented, and then some methods based directly on the equation of the observer. In the second part, various techniques are detailed for the detection of defaults (leaks and obstructions) in a pipeline under pressure. For that, we built several models by discretizing the water hammer equations using finite differences explicit and implicit in time. Then some techniques are developed using observers and optimization algorithms. Discrete models and some observers were validated by a series of experiments in pipelines. Convergence, experimental and simulation results are presented in this manuscript

En français : Pour la gestion en temps réel des étiages comme pour celle des crues, l'une des principales missions des gestionnaires de bassin consiste à prévenir les situations de crise, généralement définies par des franchissements de débits seuils en différents points stratégiques, afin d'en limiter les dégâts, tant économiques et écologiques que matériels et humains. La thèse propose une méthodologie de synthèse et d'identification d'un modèle de simulation des débits, intégrant les phénomènes de transferts hydrauliques (propagation en cours d'eau) et hydrologiques (transformation de la pluie en débit), ainsi que les transferts relatifs aux prélèvements dans le cas des étiages. Le modèle proposé, construit dans le souci constant des contraintes de l'opérationnel telles que la robustesse face aux aléas du terrain, l'assimilation des données en temps réel ou la commande automatique des vannes de barrage, présente un module hydraulique à base physique simplifiée couplé, selon une approche semi-distribuée, à un module hydrologique global conceptuel. Cette démarche permet la prise en compte de débits latéraux non jaugés dans le transfert en cours d'eau. L'approche est validée à travers des exemples théoriques et divers cas d'application réels : transfert en rivière soumis à l'influence de la marée, synthèse d'un contrôleur boucle ouverte sur un canal d'irrigation, simulation de débits à l'exutoire de divers bassins versants français, prévision des crues, synthèse d'observateurs d'états pour la reconstitution de prélèvements

The Gironde Estuary is the largest macrotidal estuary in Western Europa, formed by the Garonne River (where the urban area of Bordeaux is located) and the Dordogne River. One of its main characteristics is the presence of a Turbidity Maximum Zone (TMZ) where heterotrophic processes (organic matter decomposition) are favored and where low penetration of light limits autotrophic processes (photosynthetic activity). Low dissolved oxygen (DO) that could impact aquatic biota occurred exclusively in the fluvial, low salinity and high turbidity sections of the estuary. These environmental concerns have led to study in detail in this work factors that cause estuarine hypoxia. First, I have estimated organic matter and ammonium fluxes from urban inputs in separate and combined sewer network of the Urban Community of Bordeaux, its wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) and combined sewer overflow, to compare them to the upstream watershed inputs. Even if the two WWTPs succeed in significant reduction in organic matter and ammonium contents of effluents, discharges into estuarine waters are important especially during summer, periods while storm events can generate untreated effluent inputs. This work demonstrates the high lability of this urban organic matter through incubation experiments. The dissolved organic carbon and ammonium contents in wastewater consume oxygen. Respirometry experiments allowed us to estimate higher oxygen uptake rates in wastewater than in the waters of the Gironde Estuary. Finally, the analysis of 7-yr data series from the continuous monitoring of the physico-chemical water quality (MAGEST network: MArel Gironde ESTuary) highlights periods of hypoxia in the upstream section of the estuary during pronounced low water around the Bordeaux conurbation. Statistical treatments of the 7-yr time series of DO concentration demonstrate the significant impact of the Bordeaux metropolitan area as it appears that the under-oxygenations increase during marked low water, in the presence of the TMZ, when the water temperature is high, and where the dissolved oxygen content is already low and can be quickly consumed after untreated storm water discharges. This study also shows that the nature of biological treatment used by the WWTPs and the temporary storage capacity of storm water have a critical role in the release of such compounds into the environment. This work finally provides strategies for effluent discharges to water managers, to short and medium terms, based on hydrological and physico-chemical conditions of the environment in order to limit their impact on the water oxygenation of the Garonne River

L'étude a pour objectif de déterminer la qualité des eaux de surface sous différentes conditions climatiques et pratiques de gestion des eaux de surface. Trois sites ont étés choisis pour: (1) la rivière Jalle de Blanquefort, (2) le lac de Bordeaux, France et (3) la rivière Pasig aux Philippines. Les sites français présentent des collecteurs d'eau qui se déversent directement dans les eaux de surface. La rivière Pasig sert de collecteur d'eaux usées en l'absence de stations de traitement des eaux usées et collectées. Au cours des campagnes de mesure, il a été possible de suivre l'impact de la variabilité climatique (pluviométrie) et d'événements aléatoires sur la qualité chimiques (éléments traces métalliques et polluants organiques) des eaux ; en combinant échantillonnage classique et par capteurs passifs. Les propriétés physico-chimiques de l'eau ainsi que les caractéristiques des particules et l'utilisation d'analyses statistiques permettent de préciser le comportement des molécules détectées et de décrire l'evolution hydrochimique des eaux de surface urbaines et estuariennes vis-à-vis d'aléas climatiques contrastés

Ubiquitous presence of pharmaceuticals in the environment is of great concern. In this Ph.D. work, occurrence and fate of these organic contaminants were studied in the estuarine Garonne River, receiving treated effluents of the Bordeaux urban area (France). After developing and validating the analytical methods for multi-residue detection of 53 pharmaceuticals in water and sediment, composition and variability of the Bordeaux wastewater treatment plant influents and effluents were characterized. Presence of analytes in river water, suspended solids and sediments was then investigated on a periurban river located in the suburbs of Bordeaux. Besides, a long-term monitoring of estuarine Garonne River revealed the relative importance of local and upstream inputs and clearly showed a seasonal in-situ degradation of certain pharmaceuticals. This degradation was further confirmed and examined through batch experiments simulating the mixing conditions of wastewater and estuarine river water, highlighting the importance of suspended solid concentration in biodegradation rates

Les canaux d'irrigation sont des systèmes hydrauliques à surface libre qui servent à conduire l'eau de sa source vers ses usagers. Dans cette thèse on s'intéresse à l'application de la commande automatique robuste aux canaux d'irrigation. La mise en œuvre de la commande automatique a été effectuée en deux étapes. D'abord, on s'est intéressé à la modélisation du système réel, puis on a étudié la synthèse de la loi de commande. Un modèle linéaire à la base des équations de Saint Venant a été conçu pour la commande. Les modèles de deux systèmes réels, le canal d'Evora (Portugal) et le canal de Gignac (France) ont été obtenus et analysés dans le domaine fréquentiel. La deuxième étape de l'application de la commande automatique a consisté dans l'élaboration d'une méthodologie de contrôle robuste. L'analyse de la stabilité, de la performance et des marges de robustesse de la boucle fermée a été effectuée de façon théorique à l'aide des outils de l'automatique classique. Des contrôleurs de type PI décentralisés ont été synthétisés pour un système mono-bief. Leurs performance et robustesse ont été testées de façon expérimentale et en simulation. Les résultats obtenus ont confirmé la pertinence de la méthodologie générique de modélisation et de contrôle. Cette méthodologie a été étendue ensuite dans le cas d'un système multi-bief. Le système multi-bief "hérite" les propriétés de stabilité et de robustesse des systèmes mono-biefs. Par contre, la performance globale du système est dégradée à cause des interactions entre sous-systèmes mono-bief. Afin de remédier à ce problème on a proposé la synthèse d'une commande anticipée

In a context of contemporary reflections on the sustainability of urban water utilities, we focus on Lyonnaise des Eaux's corporate social responsibility strategy as a contribution to putting into words and implementing sustainable development in this sector. This work aims at analyzing on the one hand the causes, processes, goals of Lyonnaise des Eaux CSR strategy and understanding on the other hand the impact of these strategies on the company's territorial embeddedness. CSR's territorial impetus is expressed via a global-local interaction process leading to the regionalization of Lyonnaise des Eaux CSR strategy and, its local embodiment through sustainable development projects. Based on the example of water management in the Bordeaux metropolis, we have studied and conducted two sustainable development projects within the company, one focused on water poverty management and the other focused on sustainable management of domestic water consumption. Exploring the feasibility conditions of these CSR projects highlights the opportunities for the company to meet the challenges of the territory by limiting the impact associated with its business or generate specific resources necessary for its integration into local innovation systems. The territorial approach of corporate responsibility strategy shows that it also appears as a negotiated interface used by Lyonnaise des Eaux for its adaptation and action at different scales

Being at the interface between continental and marine systems, estuaries are essential areas for matter exchanges. Therefore, they play a crucial role in biological and biogeochemical cycles. In addition to natural fluctuations, these systems have also undergone increasing climate and anthropogenic pressures for several decades. The present work focused on the benthic and pelagic assemblages in the fluvial section (Garonne and Dordogne rivers) of the Gironde estuary, a low salinity area where these communities had never been studied. Meiofauna, mainly composed ofnematodes, was found in relatively high abundance in both intertidal and subtidal zones.Macrozoobenthos was essentially composed of oligochaetes in the intertidal, while it was totally absent in the subtidal areas. The high plasticity of the dominant copepod Eurytemora affinis was confirmed, with a different ecological niche in the freshwater section of the estuary compared to the haline area downstream. The importance of temperature rather than the quality of the nutrient pool on the productivity of E. affinis was demonstrated, thereby confirming the great adaptability of thisspecies to a highly fluctuating habitat. Study of benthic and pelagic habitat, especially in terms of quality of the nutrient pool available to the organisms, showed that the contribution of refractoryorganic matter with a terrestrial origin is dominant. A significant contribution of microphytobenthos to the composition of sedimentary and pelagic organic matter was also highlighted. Finally, the study of planktonic communities in the fluvial part of the Gironde estuary showed that the species E. affinis occupies a key position in this part of the estuary

The interactions between shallow groundwater and sewer network are generally complex. The aim of this research is to study the impact of the water table level variation on the damages of the buried pipes. For this purpose, a three-dimensional (3D) numerical groundwater flow model of the shallow multi-aquifer of the Bordeaux urban area, within a 83 km2 area (Mérignac, Pessac, Talence), is developed, calibrated and validated. In order to do this, in a first step, a conceptual model was built based on stratigraphic descriptions of the boreholes. A geostastistical study was carried out to build the limits of the geological layers and the piezometrical maps from the measurement campaigns of water table levels. Then, an original methodology to transform the description of lithological units to local hydraulic conductivity values is proposed and the reconstruction of hydraulic conductivity fields at the urban scale was performed based on geostatistical methods. In a second step, hydrogeological conditions were simulated using the finite-difference groundwater flow model MODFLOW-2005 (Visual Modflow ©). The hydrogeological parameters were then calibrated manually and automatically based on water table elevation data measured in July 2010, October 2010 and March 2010. The model validation covered 6890 days, from June 1993 to may 2012. The results showed that the simulated heads are quite accurate and reproduce the main dynamics of the system at 35 piezometers. The spatial and temporal distribution of the heads of the piezometers simulated permitted to identify the flooding zones of the sewer network by comparing the piezometric head with the altitude of the networks. The sectors where the pipes are damaged were localized in the zone wherein there is low probability of flooding. Additionally, the natural hydrologic environment, taken as a sole factor, cannot explain the pipe breakage phenomena
