Homesteading space the Skylab story by David Hitt( )

9 editions published between 2008 and 2011 in English and held by 1,557 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Homesteading Space, by two of Skylab's own astronauts and a NASA journalist, tells the dramatic story of America's first space station from beginning to fiery end." "Homesteading Space is much more than a story of technological and scientific success; it is also an absorbing, sometimes humorous, often inspiring account of the determined, hardworking individuals who shepherded the program through a near-disastrous launch, a heroic rescue, and an exhausting study of Comet Kohoutek, as well as the lab's ultimate descent into the Indian Ocean. Featuring the unpublished in-flight diary of astronaut Alan Bean, the book is replete with the personal recollections and experiences of the Skylab crew and those who worked with them in training, during the mission, and in bringing them safely home."--BOOK JACKET

Observations of optical emissions on STS-4 by Stephen B Mende( Book )

1 edition published in 1983 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

"Following the discovery of intense vehicle glow of the space shuttle on the STS-3 mission, a new experiment to probe this phenomenon was developed and flown on the shuttle STS-4 mission. A conventional camera was equipped with an objective transmission grating and several photographic exposures were taken of the shuttle tail from the aft flight deck window. Vehicle glow surrounding shuttle surfaces exposed to the ram direction was observed on a long (400 second) exposure. From analysis of the resulting spectral data it appears that the shuttle glow has a diffuse spectral component in the region 6300 to 8000A. In addition, it has been possible to assess the spectral character of light emitted by the firing of a reaction control system thruster. Our data show that the light emitted from the thruster gases is confined to wavelengths shorter than 7200A."
