"XXXHolic, ein Sommernachtstraum" ist die filmische Adaptierung des gleichnamigen Mangas der Künstlergruppe CLAMP, die sich aus den vier Zeichnerinnen Ageha Okawa, Mokona, Satsuki Igarashi und Tsubaki Nekoi zusammensetzt. Regisseur Tsutomu Mizushima stand vor einer schwierigen Aufgabe, als es darum ging, die Zeichnungen in bewegte Bilder umzusetzen, weil der Manga sich in keine Kategorie einordnen lässt. Genau das war allerdings die Herausforderung, die ihn reizte. Besonders lange überlegte der 1965 geborene Filmemacher, wie er die Geister im Film darstellen sollte. Ziemlich schnell stand hingegen fest, dass er lieber handgemalte als computergenerierte Bilder verwenden wollte. Im ganzen Film gab es nur eine einzige Sequenz, die am Computer entstand. Tsutomu Mizushima blickt auf eine beachtliche Filmkarriere zurück - unter anderem zeichnet er für die "Crayon Shin-chan"-Trilogie verantwortlich. 2006 realisiert er im Anschluss an den Film auch noch die Fernsehserie von "XXXHolic".
