The great power struggle in East Asia, 1944-50 : Britain, America and post-war rivalry by Christopher Baxter( Book )

16 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 257 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The first comprehensive account of British policy towards China, Japan and Korea from the final stages of the Second World War to the outbreak of the Korean War, placed in the broader context of Far Eastern developments, the beginnings of the Cold War, dealings with the Commonwealth and, above all, relations with the United States. Based upon research in British, American and Australian archives, this book examines the tensions that emerged within the Anglo-American relationship as the United States sought to dominate the East Asian agenda and Britain agonised over the international role it should play in the region. That tension intensified over what the British perceived as an American failure to devise a post-war plan for East Asia other than the containment of Japan. As Communist threats inside China and Korea gained momentum, Britain, with valuable Far Eastern interests to protect, could not afford the Asian mainland to turn "red" and found itself drawn increasingly into East Asian affairs far more than it desired"--Provided by publisher

Diplomats at war : British and commonwealth diplomacy in wartime( Book )

7 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 105 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The first half of the twentieth century had a dramatic impact upon the practice of diplomacy and the role of diplomats in wartime. The advent of total war witnessed the rapid expansion of the diplomatic agenda and saw the transformation of overseas policy into wartime policy. Regional and world conflicts would revolutionise the way embassies, legations, high commissions and governorships functioned, posing formidable challenges to the authority of heads of missions whose job it was to manage the bilateral relations for which they were responsible. This book provides a survey of diplomats and their responses to the vicissitudes of war."--BOOK JACKET

Design and construction of driven pile foundations : lessons learned on the central artery by Aaron Bradshaw( )

1 edition published in 2006 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Five contracts from the Central Artery/Tunnel project in Boston, MA, were reviewed to document issues related to design and construction of driven pile formations. Given the soft and compressible marine clays in the Boston area, driven pile foundations were selected to support specific structures, including retaining walls, abutments, roadway slabs, transition structures, and ramps. This report presents the results of a study to assess the lessons learned from pile driving on the CA/T. This study focused on an evaluation of static and dynamic load test data and a case study of significant movement of an adjacent building during pile driving. The load test results showed that the piles have more capacity than what they were designed for. At the site of significant movement of an adjacent building, installation of wick drains and preaugering to mitigate additional movement proved to be ineffective. Detailed settlement, inclinometer, and piezometer data are present
