Gendered transformations : theory and practices on gender and media by Tonny Krijnen( )

18 editions published between 2010 and 2011 in English and held by 1,197 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Comprising the most current scholarship from leading experts in the fields of gender and media studies, Gendered Transformations offers readers a new foundation from which to reexamine traditional perspectives on gender and media. Organized into sections concerning representational politics, embodied performance, and social constructions of reality, these essays explore a wide variety of concerns from a similarly wide variety of perspectives. As Liesbet van Zoonen states in the introduction to this volume: 'In the current cultural condition of multimediality and intertextuality it makes more sense ... [to] see how particular media and media combinations are articulated with [particular issues] in situated diachronic and synchronic contexts.' A thought-provoking contribution to a number of disparate fields, Gendered Transformations offers a rare interdisciplinary approach to gender that reflects the most recent developments in media theory and methodology."--Page 4 of cover
Trans-reality television : the transgression of reality, genre, politics, and audience by Sofie van Bauwel( )

19 editions published between 2010 and 2012 in 3 languages and held by 1,146 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

""This collection offers an energetic and illuminating range of explorations into what is involved in thinking about generic shifts and generic contexts. It does so in a period characterized both by radical transformations in the recipes and modes for mediating reality and by provocative questions about just what kind of datum points for representation 'reality' provides. The writings here will provide an excellent encouragement toward further debate."--John Corner. University of Leeds" "In Trans-Reality Television: The Transgression of Reality, Genre. Politics, and Audience, the contributors examine the phenomenon of reality television as a tool to reflect on societal and mediated transformations and transgressions. While some delve deep into the theoretical issues, others approach the topic at hand through empirical studies of specific reality television formats and programs. The chapters in this volume are divided into four sections, all of which deal with how we see the fluid social at work in reality television through the trans-real, trans-politics, trans-genre, and trans-audience. Stressing the concept of the trans-real, the first section explores the complex construction of reality in reality television. The second section, which deals with the concept of trans-politics, offers a diversity of perspectives on the articulation and rearticulation of politics and the political. The chapters comprising the third section analyze how the modern conceptualizations of genre and format are transcended. Finally, the last section articulates the concept of trans-audience, using case studies of particular audiences and a study of reality television celebrities. Trans-Reality Television concludes by returning to the sense and nonsense of the use of 'post' concepts."--Jacket

Gender and media : representing, producing, consuming by Tonny Krijnen( )

18 editions published between 2015 and 2021 in English and held by 287 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Why do some TV genres have the label feminine or masculine? Why do we worry about boys playing video games too much while girls play just as often? Is the TV show Sex and the City empowering or not? Why are recent television shows like Desperate Housewives post-feminist television? Gender and Media explores these and other complex questions by offering a critical overview of the contemporary debates and discussions surrounding gender and mediated communication, and by providing student's with an overview of the current academic research on these topics. The book is divided into three parts: representing, producing, and consuming with each section made up of three chapters. The first chapter of each section attempts to answer the most basic questions: 'Who is represented?', 'Who produces what?' and 'Who consumes what?'. The second chapter of each section draws attention to the complexity of the relationship between gender and media, concentrating on the "why." The third and final chapter of each section addresses the latest debates in the fields of media and gender, adding a vital layer of understanding of the topic at hand. This process is aided by text boxes, which provide some additional information on the most important concepts and topics and exercises, which help bridge the gap between theory and everyday life media practices. This will be an ideal textbook for students studying gender and media, and for general courses on gender studies, sociology, cultural studies and women's studies"--
