Guy François, vers 1578-1650 : peintre caravagesque du Puy-en-Velay by
Bruno Saunier(
Book
)
2 editions published in 2018 in French and held by 36 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Guy Francis is one of those painters of the first half of the XVIIth century who made their careers outside the Parisian milieu. Active in Puy-en-Velay from 1610 until his death in 1650, he was one of the first to introduce caravagism in France, discovered during his long stay in Rome at the beginning of the century, where he also rubbed Annibal Carrache and especially Carlo Saraceni. In this sense, Guy François is an innovative artist who renews the art of painting, until then largely influenced by the production of the second school of Fontainebleau. On his return from Rome in 1613, Guy François set up his workshop in Puy-en-Velay, his hometown, and managed to rapidly build up a large clientele through the religious orders, which found in his paintings with simple and clear compositions the vehicle perfect for representing the ideas of the Counter-Reformation. This is how the art of Guy François is broadcast in a good southern half of the kingdom of France, Bordeaux to Lyon and the northern limits of Auvergne in Languedoc, with Toulouse and Montpellier. In addition to altarpieces, he also paints large sets for the Jesuits, small paintings of private devotion, portraits and some allegorical scenes. His art is a mixture of caravagism, classicism and realism, drawing in his native Velay the characters of his compositions. It emanates from his painting austere simplicity doubled by an intense poetry of his characters

Trésors en Haute-Loire : les peintures murales by
Bernard Jollivet(
Book
)
3 editions published in 2019 in French and held by 24 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Valley of the shadow : the siege of Dien Bien Phu by
Kevin M Boylan(
)
1 edition published in 2019 in English and held by 20 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Struggling to reassert control over their Indochinese colonies after World War II, the French established a huge air-land base in the valley of Dien Bien Phu. But when the opposing Vietnamese People's Army (VPA) began massing its forces against the base in late 1953, French commanders seized the opportunity to draw their elusive enemy into a decisive set-piece battle. Defending a series of fortified positions which were reliant upon a single airstrip-and later, risky and inaccurate airdrops-for reinforcement and resupply, the French troops quickly discovered that they had underestimated their enemy. In fifty-six days of costly close-quarters fighting, the VPA slowly dislodged the French from one strongpoint after another by developing novel tactics and accomplishing incredible feats of engineering. Drawing upon Vietnamese-language sources never previously employed in Western accounts of the siege, Valley of the Shadow is a dramatic re-telling of the climactic battle of the First Indochina War, the conflict that saw the French expelled from their former colony and set the stage for the "American War" in Vietnam
