International maritime security law by James Kraska( )

16 editions published between 2013 and 2018 in English and held by 1,119 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Defines an emerging interdisciplinary field of law comprised of norms, legal regimes, and rules to address today's hybrid threats to the global order of the oceans. Worldwide shipping commerce, fishing fleets, pleasure craft, and coastal states are exposed to the menace of offshore terrorism, weapons of mass destruction, piracy, smuggling, robbery, marine insurgency and anti-access threats. Land-based institutions and maritime constabulary forces operate within an increasingly integrated network that blends elements of humanitarian law, human rights law, criminal law, and law of the sea, with inspection regimes, commercial enterprise, and marine safety and environmental stewardship. The new authorities fuse together a global maritime partnership among states, international organizations and commercial interests to protect the maritime commons from the most dangerous risks and hazards"--Unedited summary from book cover

The free sea : the American fight for freedom of navigation by James Kraska( Book )

3 editions published in 2018 in English and held by 71 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Free Sea offers a unique, single-volume analysis of incidents in American history that affected U.S. freedom of navigation at sea. The book spans more than 200 years, beginning in the Colonial era with the Quasi-War with France in 1798 and extending to contemporary Freedom of Navigation operations in the South China Sea. Through wars and numerous crises with North Korea, North Vietnam, Cambodia, Iran, Russia and China, freedom of navigation has been a persistent challenge for the United States, a nation reliant on open seas for economic prosperity, military security and global order. This volume focuses on the struggle to retain freedom of the seas. Challenges to U.S. warships and maritime commerce have pushed, and continue to challenge, the United States to vindicate its rights through diplomatic, legal, and military means, underscoring the need for the strategic resolve in the global maritime commons."--

The International Dolphin Conservation Act of 1992 : unreasonable extension of U.S. jurisdiction in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean (ETP) fishery by Raul A. F Pedrozo( Book )

4 editions published between 1992 and 1993 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Since the early 1960s, one of the most controversial and emotional wildlife issues addressed by Congress has been the dispute over incidental dolphin mortality in the ETP tuna fishery. For reasons that are not entirely clear, dolphins and schools of yellowfin tuna frequently associate in the ETP. Because dolphins are easy to spot as they swim along the ocean's surface, tuna fishermen have traditionally relied on the tuna-dolphin bond to locate large schools of yellowfin tuna. Prior tro 1959, this technique of locating tuna did not pose a serious threat to dolphins because the primary commercial method used to harvest yellowfin tuna was the line-and-pole. The threat to dolphins increased dramatically in 1959, however, with the introduction of purse seine nets to the ETP tuna fishery
