While riding through the desert during a rain storm, Hoppy hears gunshots on the trail ahead. Wearily, he continues on until he comes to the body of a gunfighter and the wounded guard of the stagecoach to Seven Pines, a mining town. Cassidy tends the guard's wounds, then rides to find a doctor. When he and the posse returns, the young man is dead, apparently a suicide. Cassidy and the doctor soon discover, however, that he has been murdered. Angry that a man in his charge could be killed in such a cowardly fashion, Hoppy decides to investigate. He soon learns there have been several robberies and a lot of rustling in the area. There are several men in town who are capable of being responsible. To find out who, Cassidy takes on the job of Segundo of the Bob Ronson outfit, the biggest in the country. The situation soon dissolves into open warfare between the Ronson's Rocking R and the neighboring 3 G Ranch. Other factions lead by the mysterious Clarry Jacks are also involved. The brother of the murdered guard, Ben Lock, and Cassidy trail Jacks. Jacks, who is responsible for killing Lock's brother, and his gang are finally killed after several shootouts
