Cultivating the spirit : how college can enhance students' inner lives by Alexander W Astin( Book )

12 editions published between 2010 and 2013 in English and held by 512 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book is predicated on the belief that the spiritual development of college students has been largely ignored in our colleges and universities, despite the importance of spiritual matters to young people in their quest to lead integrated lives. Thus, while academics are understandably proud of their "outer" accomplishments in the fields of science, medicine, technology, and commerce, colleges and universities have increasingly come to neglect the student's "inner" development--the sphere of values and beliefs, emotional maturity, spirituality, and self-understanding. The book defines "spiritual development" very broadly: how students make meaning of their education and their lives, how they develop a sense of purpose, the value and belief dilemmas that they experience, as well as the role of religion, the sacred, and the mystical in their lives. Each student, of course, will view his or her spirituality in a unique way. For many, traditional religious beliefs and practices may form the core of their spirituality; for others such beliefs and practices may play little or no part. While two-thirds of the students in the study express a strong interest in spiritual matters, well over half report that their professors never encourage discussions of religious/spiritual matters, and about the same proportion report that professors never provide opportunities to discuss the purpose and meaning of life. By raising public awareness of the important role that spirituality plays in student learning and development, by alerting academic administrators, faculty, and curriculum committees to the importance of spiritual development, and by identifying possible strategies for enhancing that development, the book will encourage institutions to give greater priority to these spiritual aspects of students' educational and personal development."

"This book reveals how faculty perceive the intersections between spirituality and higher education, and the implications their spiritual inclinations have for undergraduate education and the nature of faculty life in the academy. Based on interactions with faculty over the course of the Spirituality in Higher Education project, this book is written for scholars, administrators, and faculty at large. The book is framed conversationally with faculty voices featured. The author describes the research findings and insights and makes clear the implications for faculty development and the quality of life in higher education"--

The American college teacher : national norms for the 1995-96 HERI faculty survey by Jennifer A Lindholm( Book )

2 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report summarizes the highlights of a national survey of college and university faculty that was conducted by the Higher Education Research Institute (heri) in fall and winter of 2001-2001. This is the fifth in a series of surveys conducted on a triennial basis. Results are based on the responses of 32,840 full-time college and university faculty members at 358 two-year colleges, four-year colleges, and universities nationwide. Data are reported separately for men and women and for 12 different institutional groupings stratified for institutional control (public, private, nonsectarian, Catholic, and Protestant) and type (university, four-year college, and two-year college). An overview summarizes findings on: (1) background characteristics; (2) faculty perspectives on undergraduate education at the start of a new millennium; (3) increased use of student-centered instructional and evaluation methods; (4) continued gains in faculty support for tenure; (5) increased focus on student diversity issues; (6) shifting institutional priorities; (7) value placed on social concerns and status attainment; and (8) work satisfaction and stress. The bulk of the document consists of six tables of normative data for the survey. Four appendixes contain a discussion of the research methodology, the survey instrument, a discussion of data precision, and a description of participants in the surveys. (Sld)
Organizational Culture and Institutional Transformation by Jennifer R Keup( Book )

1 edition published in 2001 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The purpose of the digest is to review the research on institutional transformation as it relates to institutional culture. The discussion of organizational culture's importance in institutional transformation is organized around three primary aspects of the change process: (1) readiness and responsiveness; (2) resistance to change; and (3) results of the transformation. Transformation alters the culture of the institution by changing select underlying assumptions and institutional behaviors, processes, and products. At the same time, organizational culture and cultural change can be used as a means of preparing an environment for transformation, a yardstick for assessing whether or not a transformational change has actually taken place, and a means of achieving the desired results of an innovation. The success of any transformational effort may depend on the extent to which practitioners are able to address issues of institutional culture in their strategic planning. (Contains 16 references.)
