Freedom and happiness in economic thought and philosophy : from clash to reconciliation( Book )

13 editions published between 2011 and 2014 in English and held by 160 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Starting from a distinction made by the American philosopher, John Rawls, in 2000 between two kinds of liberalism, "liberalism of freedom" and "liberalism of happiness", this book presents a range of articles by economists and philosophers debating the most fundamental aspects of the subject. These include the exact significance of Rawls' distinction and how it can be related to European political philosophy on the one hand and to utilitarianism on the other hand; the various definitions of happiness and freedom and their implications and the informational basis of individual preferences. The objectives of the book are twofold: first, it is devoted to a thorough analysis of the founding texts of both liberalisms. It aims to determine the logic of selection of the concepts which these traditions consider as relevant. The Kantian pair "Reasonable"/"Rational" can be seen as the basis on which these concepts are defined, our final concern being to reveal the profound relations of complementarity between them: we call it reconciliation. Secondly, we consider a fundamental issue of welfare economics -- how to appraise individual preferences -- in light of the Rawlsian distinction. It is emphasized that neither a criterion based on liberalism of freedom by itself, nor an evaluation in terms of liberalism of happiness by itself exhausts the question of utility. One must combine both aspects in order to cope with that issue. To do so, it is claimed that one can resort to the concept of metaranking of preferences. All the contributions included in this book are the outcomes of a collective research project of three years. The contributors come from a variety of backgrounds and yet are unified in developing a specific position about freedom and happiness. This book should be of interest to those focusing on the history of economic thought as well as moral, political and economic philosophy

2 editions published in 1987 in French and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

2 editions published between 2009 and 2012 in French and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This thesis contributes to the understanding of the contribution of education to growth through an improved definition of the process of human capital production by education. Our analysis brings out the influence of talents allocation on human capital creation and hence on technological progress and economic growth. Our study is divided in two parts. Following our reading of the public instruction project by Condorcet, we first depict the concept of talents allocation, and define an indicator so as to formally reveal it. In the second part, our reflection is applied to the dual evolution of post elementary education in France and Prussia at the end of the XIXth century. The cliometric analysis aims at evaluating the influence of talents allocation efficiency, as defined in the first part, on technological and economical progress. A significant influence of talents allocation efficiency on the technological level of both economies is underlined, which supports how considering this indicator, in contemporary theoretical reflections dealing with the link between education and economic growth, is relevant

2 editions published between 2004 and 2005 in French and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Which concept of freedom should we use in a theory of distributive justice or, more simply, when a redistribution policy is decided? How, in the particular context of social choice theory, public actions should be determined in order to guarantee to the members of a society this concept of freedom? These are the questions we wish to answer in our study, which is divided in two parts: the first one explains our operational and synthetical concept of freedom. In our second part, we apply this concept of freedom to a particular context: the social choice theory. Elaborating a operational concept of freedom brings in the pairs freedom of the ancients / freedom of the moderns, negative freedom / positive freedom and individual responsibility. The necessity to overcome the opposition between freedom of the ancients and freedom of the moderns is strongly underlined by Rawls after Hegel. We consider then an other pair of freedoms: the pair negative freedom / positive freedom. The concept of capability which reflects it is integrated in our synthetical concept of freedom. However it will be complete only by integrating the notion of individual responsbility. A comparative analysis of Roemer’s and Sen’s approaches stresses how Roemer’s approach extends Sen’s capability by introducing some components apt to reflect individual responsibility. This concept of freedom is then used in the second part of the study in order to find some possibility results to the impossibility theorems caused by invasive preferences and elaborated in the social-choice-theoretic framework, in particular the impossibility of a Paretian liberal and Gibbard’s paradox. Finally, a Preference Modification Mechanism is elaborated: it selects and launders invasive preferences consistent with the values of the society
Architecture du système d'Adam Smith by Jean-Daniel Boyer( Book )

1 edition published in 2006 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This thesis examines the structure underlying Adam Smith's work. It attempts to show that its coherence may be discerned as we let ourselves be guided by the idea that some of the author's methodological principles are drawn from Newton. We wonder about the author's explicit evocation of gravitation which is assumed to explain the way societies work. For social norms indeed, appear to be revolving round natural laws, just as market prices are, round natural prices or round the value of commodities. There also lies the implicit evocation of a force of attraction governing the destiny of human societies that would in time, tend towards an ideal City. Such a process would then be at the root of the need for the implementation and establishment of a specific institution of justice: the state. And Adam Smith would eventually emphasize the liberalism of liberty and justice
Gender equality and economic growth in the long-run : a cliometric analysis by Faustine Perrin( )

1 edition published in 2013 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

1 edition published in 2011 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

1 edition published in 2013 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
