The crimes of Elagabalus : the life and legacy of Rome's decadent boy emperor by Martijn Icks( Book )

38 editions published between 2010 and 2014 in English and German and held by 533 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Elagabalus is one of the most notorious of Rome's 'bad emperors': a sexually-depraved and eccentric hedonist who in his short and riotous reign made unprecedented changes to Roman state religion and defied all taboos. An oriental boy-priest from Syria - aged just fourteen when he was elevated to power in 218 CE - he placed the sun god El-Gabal at the head of the established Roman pantheon, engaged in orgiastic rituals, took male and female lovers, wore feminine dress and prostituted himself in taverns and even inside the imperial palace. Since his assassination by Praetorian Guards at the age of eighteen, Elagabalus has been an object of fascination to historians and a source of inspiration for artists and writers

11 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 134 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Character assassination is the deliberate destruction of an individual's reputation. Most notable victims of character assassination are political and religious leaders, officials, celebrities, writers, scientists, athletes, and other public figures. 'Character assassins' target the private lives, behavior, values, and identities of their victims. The editors and contributors to this volume have gathered cases and insights from the fields of history, political science, and psychology to track many common characteristics of character assassination, as well as to describe their unique features over different times and places. The authors show that character assassination is a timeless, cross-cultural phenomenon that reveals itself in a variety of forms and methods typical for every cultural, political, and technological epoch
