The republic in crisis, 1848-1861 by John Ashworth( Book )

11 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 322 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Republic in Crisis, 1848-1861 analyzes the political climate in the years leading up to the Civil War, offering for students and general readers a clear, chronological account of the sectional conflict and the beginning of the Civil War. Emerging from the tumultuous political events of the 1840s and 1850s, the Civil War was caused by the maturing of the North and South's separate, distinctive forms of social organization and their resulting ideologies. John Ashworth emphasizes factors often overlooked in explanations of the war, including the resistance of slaves in the South and the growth of wage labor in the North. Ashworth acquaints readers with modern writings on the period, providing a new interpretation of the American Civil War's causes"--

Slavery, capitalism, and politics in the antebellum Republic, Volume 1, Commerce and compromise, 1820-1850 by John Ashworth( )

1 edition published in 1995 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Civil War should be seen as America's 'bourgeois revolution'. So argues Dr John Ashworth in this novel reinterpretation, from a Marxist perspective, of American political and economic development in the forty years before the Civil War. This book, the first of a two-volume treatment of slavery, capitalism and politics, locates the political struggles of the antebellum period in the international context of the dismantling of unfree labor systems. With its sequel, the volume will demonstrate that the conflict resulted from differences between capitalist and slave modes of production. With a careful synthesis of existing scholarship on the economics of slavery, the origins of abolitionism, the proslavery argument and the second party system, Ashworth maintains that the origins of the American Civil War are best understood in terms derived from Marxism
Slavery, capitalism, and politics in the antebellum Republic, Volume 2, The coming of the Civil War, 1850-1861 by John Ashworth( )

1 edition published in 2007 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The second and concluding volume of Professor Ashworth's study of American antebellum politics, this book offers an exciting new interpretation of the origins of the Civil War. The volume deals with the politics of the 1850s and with the plunge into civil war. Professor Ashworth offers a new way of understanding the conflict between North and South and shows how northern free labor increasingly came into conflict with southern slavery as a result of both changes in the northern economy and the structural weaknesses of slavery

Field study to assess the feasibility of disposing of diesel invert-based cuttings residues using land application by John Ashworth( Book )

4 editions published in 1990 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

`Invert' drilling fluids consist of a dominant organic liquid component in which inorganic additives are dispersed. When sections of oil or natural gas wells are drilled with diesel oil-based invert mud, a residue of diesel invert mud and rock cuttings (DIMR) is produced. In addition to the oil component, DIMR often contains heavy loadings of added salts such as calcium chloride. The safe disposal of DIMR has become a concern to both environmentalists and to producers of energy. This report presents the results of a test in which DIMR was rototilled into the surface soil of small plots in June 1986. Manure, fertilizer, charcoal, and spent carbon-granules were added before seeding with a mixture of grasses and the soil was monitored for concentrations of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)
