Generalization of Respiratory Symptom Triggers( )

1 edition published in 2015 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Abstract: Behavioral management of asthma and other chronic conditions depends upon the accurate identification of environmental factors that trigger symptom onset. In this study, we developed a lab-based conditioning method to study category-based acquisition and generalization of respiratory symptom triggers. During trigger acquisition, unique exemplars of two different categories were shown to a sample of healthy participants ( n  = 48). CS + exemplars were paired with CO2 inhalation on 50% of trials, while CS- exemplars were always paired with room air. Trigger categories differed in their conceptual similarity. In a generalization task, participants rated symptom expectancy for a set of triggers that included previously seen exemplars, novel exemplars, and exemplars from novel categories. Results show that participants acquired differential symptom expectancies based on category information, which generalized to novel CS + exemplars and novel categories that shared similarity with the CS + category. Greater similarity between CS + and CS- categories increased differential effects for both old and novel exemplars of CS + and CS- categories, and increased the proportion of novel CS + exemplars that were remembered as being seen during acquisition. These findings suggest that a more narrowly defined contrast between triggers and nontriggers promotes category-based inference and could help to reduce uncertainty about potential triggers. Highlights: Respiratory symptom triggers generalize based on categorical information Similarity of CS +/CS- categories increases generalization to novel exemplars Similarity of CS +/CS- categories increases false recognition of CS + exemplars

The impact of harmfulness information on citric acid induced cough and urge-to-cough( )

1 edition published in 2015 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Abstract: Purpose: The cough reflex is an automatic protective reflex, which can be modulated by conscious effort or other forms of top-down control. In this experiment, we investigated whether information about harmfulness of a cough-inducing substance would augment cough reflex sensitivity and associated urge-to-cough. Methods: Healthy participants (N=39) were randomized to receive information that they were to inhale a harmless substance (natural citric acid), or a potentially harmful substance (a potent agro-chemical acid). Using dosimeter-controlled inhalations, the dose of citric acid eliciting at least three coughs (C3) was determined. Next, participants received 4 blocks of randomized presentations of citric acid at the C3 dose, a sub-threshold dose of citric acid and saline control. Results: C3 was reached for 27/39 participants, and C3 thresholds were not influenced by harmfulness information. During repeated citric acid presentations, framing the cough-inducing substance as a potentially harmful chemical resulted in a greater urge-to-cough compared to information framing it as natural citric acid (p<.01). The experimental manipulation did not influence cough frequencies. Conclusions: Our findings show that harmfulness information influences urge-to-cough, corroborating the role of cortical mechanisms in modulating the urge-to-cough and suggesting that cognitive manipulations may contribute to cough treatment

Layers of time in the urban landscape. Visions of socialist urbanism in Mitrovica( Book )

2 editions published in 2018 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Judicial review of merger decisions : an overview of EU and national case law by Thomas Janssens( )

1 edition published in 2015 in English and held by 0 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A survey of merger litigation in Europe, 25 years after the entry into force of the first EU merger regulation and the subsequent merger control proliferation across the Member States certainly deserves a special issue of e-Concurrence. Indeed, a high-level review of merger cases brought before EU and national Courts reveals some interesting trends of both convergence and divergence."--Introduction
The Impala judgment : does EC merger control need to be fixed or fine-tuned? by Rachel Brandenburger( )

1 edition published in 2007 in English and held by 0 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In its Impala judgment last year, the Court of First Instance annulled a European Commission unconditional merger clearance decision for the first time. As a result, the Commission is having to carry out a new investigation into a transaction that closed over two years ago. In this judgment, the Court applied the three-limbed test for collective dominance from Airtours judgment. But this time it assessed strengthening, as opposed to creation, of collective dominance. Importantly, the Court made it clear that the Commission must base a clearance on equally solid grounds as a prohibition. We examine a number of the fundamental issues that the Impala judgment has raised. These have significance beyond the factual context of the case itself, both for the way the Commission must conduct its investigations and for the role of judicial review by the EC courts. We conclude by suggesting some changes in Court and Commission practices that would, we believe, strengthen the effectiveness of EC merger control."--Abstract
