Most of the collection consists of the correspondence of Senator James Lloyd with national figures, such as President John Adams, Marquis de Lafayette and Andrew Jackson, other political associates, and family members and friends. The correspondence of his father and grandfather, James and Henry Lloyd, concerns personal business and medical matters, mostly with family members. The letters to William Vassall pertain to his personal and business affairs. Collection also contains legal documents, genealogical data, clippings, membership diplomas, account books, and photographs. The legal documents are land claims, deeds, wills, contracts, and writs. Additional documents of the Temple and Nelson families are included in the collection

Cope, a school teacher in New Lenox, Massachusetts, to Mrs. Julia Lindley, in Williamstown, Massachusetts, describing her life as a school teacher (1855), from Kate Temple, Winona, Minnesota to her sister Julia (1858) writing about hard times in Minnesota, railroad building in the Territory, possible removal of the family to Iowa, from Seth Temple in Winona to his brother in which he discusses wild cat currency and prices of land (1859), the effect of the panic on Western banks, and the price of wheat, reaction to the seccession of South Carolina (1861), the relationship between the panic of 1873 in the east and western farm prices (1873)

There are also numerous cases dealing with the Temple family debts and non-payment of tithes, as well as cases dealing with personal charges of libel, perjury, and assault and battery. As least half of the cases were heard before the Court of Chancery, as well as other major central couts. The bulk of the cases cover the time of Sir Thomas Temple, 1st Bart. (1567-1637), Sir Peter Temple, 2nd Bart. (1592-1653), and Sir Richard Temple (1634-1697)
