A community of scholars : impressions of the Institute for Advanced Study by Serge J-F Levy( )

2 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 1,429 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This beautifully illustrated anthology celebrates eighty years of history and intellectual inquiry at the Institute for Advanced Study, one of the world's leading centers for theoretical research. Featuring essays by current and former members and faculty along with photographs by Serge J-F. Levy, the book captures the spirit of curiosity, freedom, and comradeship that is a hallmark of this unique community of scholars. Founded in 1930 in Princeton, New Jersey, the institute encourages and supports fundamental research in the sciences and humanities--the original, often speculative thinking

M. Ram Murty has had a profound impact on the development of number theory throughout the world. To honor his mathematical legacy, a conference focusing on new research directions in number theory inspired by his most significant achievements was held from October 15-17, 2013, at the Centre de Recherches Mathématiques in Montréal. This proceedings volume is representative of the broad spectrum of topics that were addressed at the conference, such as elliptic curves, function field arithmetic, Galois representations, L-functions, modular forms and automorphic forms, sieve methods, and transcendental number theory
Supersingular reduction of Drinfeld modules by Chantal David( Book )

5 editions published between 1993 and 1994 in English and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Let $phi$ be a rank 2 Drinfeld A-module over the ring A of polynomials over some finite field $F sb{q}$. We give a bound on the norm of those primes p of A which are factors of $P sb{d}(j sb phi)$ for two distinct polynomials d $in$ A. We then show that the number of supersingular primes of $phi$ with norm smaller than x is $gg log log$ x. We investigate the endomorphism rings of supersingular Drinfeld A-modules over finite fields. Under a mild hypothesis, this leads to an upper bound of $x sp{3/4} log sp2 x$ for the number of supersingular primes of $phi$, with even degree, and norm smaller than x. Finally, we present the problem of the average distribution of supersingular primes of Drinfeld modules."--

Contribution à l'étude expérimentale d'un outil de mélange de type co-malaxeur : application aux polymères by Benjamin Monchatre( )

1 edition published in 2015 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The aim of this PhD work is to gain a better understanding of the co-kneading process, whose knowledge is still lacking compared to other types of mixer such as the single screw extruder or the twin-screw extruder. This manuscript features several experimental studies about the co-kneader. The influence of screw speed and throughput was explored by measurements of the residence time distribution, material temperature, die pressure, filling rate, as well as dispersion of glass fibers. The influence of the viscosity of the polymer melt on the residence time distribution, die pressure and temperature within the co-kneader, was also investigated by varying the barrel temperature or the molecular weight of the polymer. The RTD is similar regardless of the viscosity, despite differences in pressure and material temperature. The influence of the screw profile on the RTD was obtained by experiments interchanging locally the types of elements (conveying and mixing). A method of measurement of the pressure along the barrel by micro-capillary extrusion through the location of pins in the barrel was developped, pressure gradients are similar to those obtained in twin-screw extruders. Finally, a series of experiments was dedicated to the gelation of PVC evaluated both qualitatively and quantitatively, and showed that the temperature governs the gelation rate

The average number of amicable pairs and aliquot cycles for a family of elliptic curves by James Parks( )

1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Let E be an elliptic curve over Q. Silverman and Stange defined the set (p_1, ..., p_L) of distinct primes to be an aliquot cycle of length L of E if each p_i is a prime of good reduction for E such that #E_{p_1)(F_{p_1})=p_2, ..., #E_{p_{L-1}}(F_{p_{L-1}})=p_L, #E_{p_L}(F_{p_L})=p_1. Let \pi_{E, L}(X) denote the aliquot cycle counting function with p<=X. They conjectured for elliptic curves without complex multiplication that \pi_{E, L}(X) ̃\sqrt{X}/(\log X){̂L}. Jones refined this conjecture to give an explicit constant, namely \pi_{E, L}C̃_{E, L}\sqrt{X}/(\log X)L̂. In this thesis we will show that the conjectured upper bound holds for \pi_{E, L}(X) on average over the family of all elliptic curves with a short length for the average
