Abstract: In this piece of work, the synthesis of Fe3 O4 nano-particles supported on coal-derived humic acid is reported along with their amazing performance in reduction of toxic p -nitrophenol in water media. Detailed characterization of these nano-composites materials were established by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Field–dependent magnetization (VSM). TEM analysis indicated that the average diameter of the Fe3 O4 nanoparticle supported on coal-derived humic acid was about 5–20 nm. TGA characterization showed that the Humi-Fe3 O4 nanocomposite materials contained about 17.19% (w/w) humic acid. The as-synthesised Humi-Fe3 O4 nanocomposite material is found to be an excellent and magnetically recoverable catalyst for the chemical reduction of toxic p -nitrophenol to p -aminophenol (90–92% after 6 h of reaction time), and it can be recycled for three times without significant loss of its catalytic activity
