China in the era of Xi Jinping : domestic and foreign policy challenges by Robert S Ross( )

10 editions published between 2012 and 2016 in English and Italian and held by 875 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Xi Jinping became general secretary of the Communist Party of China in 2013, taking his leadership role at a time of continuing economic expansion and military modernization that seem destined to make China a superpower. Xi has become China's most powerful and popular leader since Mao, and his vision of the "Chinese dream" of "great renewal" does not seem like an empty political slogan. But the image of China's meteoric rise masks some problems that are simmering both at home and abroad. This book will examine the prospects for China's continuing rise but also the emergent and unintended consequences posed by China's domestic transformation and international assertiveness. The three most urgent and interrelated domestic challenges facing China's leaders are sustaining economic growth, fighting corruption, and maintaining social stability. In foreign policy, its neighbors and the United States have questions about what China wants and whether it will be a revisionst state or be content with most aspects of the status quo. There is also concern that nationalist pressures within China may put domestic pressure on foreign policy
International order at sea : how it is challenged, how it is maintained by Jo Inge Bekkevold( )

11 editions published between 2016 and 2018 in 3 languages and held by 169 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book examines how international order at sea is challenged, changed and maintained. The book surveys challenges to the international order at sea in the Asia-Pacific, the Indian Ocean Region, the Atlantic Ocean and the Arctic Ocean. It explores the interaction between and cooperation among leading, emerging and smaller naval powers, both naval and coastguard responses, required for the maintenance of good order at sea. Six broad and interlinked issues are identified that will influence the future international order at sea: the balance between the maritime and the continental domains; the balance between great power rivalry and cooperation; the contest between access and denial; the operational balance between preparing; building and training for warfighting as opposed to operations other than war; how to manage 'disorder' security challenges that very often transcends territorial waters and national boundaries, and finally, the balance between safeguarding national interests and contributing to collective efforts preserving the international order at sea

Security, strategy and military change in the 21st century : cross-regional perspectives by Jo Inge Bekkevold( )

6 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 103 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This edited volume explores and analyses strategic thinking, military reform and adaptation in an era of Asian growth, European austerity and US rebalancing. A significant shift in policy, strategy and military affairs is underway in both Asia and Europe, with the former gaining increasing prominence in the domain of global security. At the same time, the world's powers are now faced with an array of diverse challenges. The resurgence of great power politics in both Europe and Asia, along with the long term threats of terrorism, piracy and sustained geopolitical instability has placed great strain on militaries and security institutions operating with constrained budgets and wary public support. The volume covers a wide range of case studies, including the transformation of China's military in the 21st century, the internal and external challenges facing India, Russia's military modernization program and the USA's reassessment of its strategic interests. In doing so, the book provides the reader with the opportunity to conceptualize how strategic thinking, military reform, operational adaptation and technological integration have interacted with the challenges outlined above. With contributions by leading scholars and practitioners from Europe and Asia, this book provides a valuable contribution to the understanding of strategic and operational thinking and adjustment across the world. This book will be of much interest to students of military and strategic studies, security studies, defence studies, Asian politics, Russian politics, US foreign policy and IR in general

China's rise and international politics by Jo Inge Bekkevold( )

1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The rise of China and its wider implications for international politics form the most important issue in our time. China's economic miracle has contributed to growth and development both at home and broad. Based on the World Bank's purchasing-power-parity(PPP) valuation of a country's GDP, China's GDP may surpass the US GDP in 2014. China's economic growth has also enabled a rapid modernization of China's armed forces. China's military expenditure is still only a fifth of the United States' military budget but is fast catching up, and China's official military budget of USD 132 billion in 2014 is twice the size of Russia's military spending. China's increased economic and military might is changing not only Chinese society and how the Chinese view their role and place in the world but also the regional dynamics in Asia, and it has the potential to transform international politics at large
