Botticelli Reimagined by Sandro Botticelli( Book )

3 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 404 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Florentine painter Sandro Botticelli (1445-1510) is one of the greatest artists of all time. Renowned for the iconic Birth of Venus and Primavera, his work has become part of our collective visual memory, influencing product development, fashion design and artists as diverse as Andy Warhol, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, René Magritte and Jeff Koons. But Botticelli's fame today was by no means a foregone conclusion. Quickly forgotten after his death, he was only rediscovered as an artist in the nineteenth century -- and much of what we know of his work has been pieced together from fragmentary evidence; only three of his works are signed or documented. Since then, ''Botticelli'' has been interpreted in many different ways, and has led to many questions. How does a painter acquire international fame? What made Botticelli a pop icon? Why are his works considered timeless? What is it that makes him so ''European'' that his Venus appears on the 10 cent coin? What we can say -- safely -- is that Botticelli, more than any other Old Master, inspired and continues to inspire modern and contemporary art."--Publisher's description
Wanderlust : von Caspar David Friedrich bis Auguste Renoir by Birgit Verwiebe( Book )

9 editions published in 2018 in German and Undetermined and held by 102 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

When we think of the wanderer as a painterly motif, the famous painting "Wanderer above the Sea of Fog" by Caspar David Friedrich comes to mind. This exceptional loan from the Hamburger Kunsthalle forms the starting point for a special exhibition held at the Alte Nationalgalerie, which follows this surprisingly central theme in art throughout the nineteenth century and all the way to famous works of modern art. With Rousseau's call to get "back to nature!" and Goethe's Sturm und Drang poetry, wandering around 1800 became the expression of a modern awareness of life. As part of a reaction against the rapid social changes that began in the French Revolution, a new form of decelerated self- and world knowledge developed, whose presence can still be felt today. Since the Romantic period, artists have discovered nature for them-selves, exploring it on foot and looking at it from new angles. Wandering, in art, came to stand for life's journey, for symbolic pilgrimage. For the traveller, the self-determined journey on foot brought with it a new, intensified encounter with nature and a form of world-appropriation that was both sensual and physical. The works shown in the exhibition, including masterworks by Caspar David Friedrich, Carl Blechen, Karl Friedrich Schinkel, Johan Christian Dahl, Richard Wilson, Christen Købke, Gustave Courbet, Iwan Kramskoi, Ferdinand Hodler, Auguste Renoir, Emil Nolde, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Otto Dix and Ernst Barlach, show just how powerful and fruitful the motif of the wanderer was in art throughout the nineteenth century, not only in Germany but in many places, from France and Great Britain to Denmark, Norway and Russia. The exhibition is arranged in themed sections: The Discovery of Nature; Life's Journey; The Artist's Wanderings; The Promenaders; Italy - Land of Longing; Landscapes of Wandering North of the Alps.--www.smb.museum

The Botticelli Renaissance by Staatliche Museen zu Berlin( Book )

1 edition published in 2015 in German and held by 32 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Florentine painter Sandro Botticelli (1445-1510) is celebrated as one of the most important painters of the Italian Renaissance. His paintings have been endlessly reproduced and interpreted. His motifs - widely borrowed and adapted - have gone out into the world, often at a considerable remove from the originals. Indeed, they can take us so far away from the actual paintings by Botticelli that the artist's name has come to stand for fashion and lifestyle, with no mention at all of his work. Products are named after him, displays of popular culture follow patterns established by him, and individual figures, chief among them his iconic Venus, have become part of the collective visual memory. Botticelli's fame today was by no means a foregone conclusion. Quickly forgotten after his death, he was only rediscovered in the nineteenth century. The English Pre-Raphaelites and their admiration for Botticelli's work were instrumental in ushering in an extraordinary renaissance that went on to captivate the imagination of a growing circle of artists and, eventually, to enchant the public at large. Since then, Botticelli's work has been interpreted in many different ways. Yet it continues to raise a multitude of questions. How does a painter acquire international fame? What made Botticelli a pop icon? Why are his works considered timeless? What is it that makes him so 'European' that his Venus appears on the obverse of a 10 cent euro coin? What we can safely say is that Botticelli, more than almost any other Old Master, inspired and continues to inspire modern and contemporary art.
