Translation of autobiography : narrating self, translating the other by Susan Xu Yun( )

14 editions published in 2017 in English and Undetermined and held by 689 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book presents an interdisciplinary study that straddles four academic fields, namely, autobiography, stylistics, narratology and translation studies. It shows that foregrounding is manifested in the language of autobiography, alerting readers to an authorial tone with certain ideological affiliations. In refuting the presumed conflation between the author, narrator and character in autobiography, the study emphasizes readers' role in constructing an implied author. The issues of implied translator, assumed translation and rewriting are explored through a comparative analysis of the English and Chinese autobiographies by Singapore's founding father Lee Kuan Yew. The analysis identifies different foregrounding practices and attributes these differences to an implied translator. Further evidence derived from narrative-communicative situations in the two autobiographies underscores divergent personae of the implied authors. The study aims to establish a deeper understanding of how translation and rewriting have a far-reaching impact on the self- and world-making functions of autobiography. This book will be of special interest to scholars and students of linguistics, literature, translation and political science

The role that myosin II plays in altering cell shape and behavior during development in dictyostelium discoideum by Susan Xu Yun( Book )

2 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Dictyostelium axenic cell lines have been tested for vegetative motility and cell behavior. The data shows that different cell lines display significant differences in vegetative motility and cell behavior in a substrate-dependent manner. NC4A2 cells behave more like wild type NC4 than do other axenic cell lines. For developmental cells, the interval of cAMP pulsing decreases as development proceeds for wild-type and $mhcA\sp-$ cells. The cAMP pulsing of $mhcA\sp-$ cells is slower than wild type cells. When 2% of fluorescently labeled wild type cells are mixed with $mhcA\sp-$ cells, they have a lower mean rate than when alone, which suggests that the $mhcA\sp-$ cells interfere with wild type cells in cell movement. When 2% of labeled $mhcA\sp-$ are mixed with cells in which one of the two adhesion mechanisms is affected, or double mutants in which both adhesion mechanisms are affected, the $mhcA\sp-$ cells are distorted by interactions with the adhesion mutant cells. $mhcA\sp-$ cells are excluded from streams composed of cells lacking either one of the two adhesion systems but mix randomly with cells lacking both adhesion systems, suggesting that the flaccid cortex of $mhcA\sp-$ cells cannot generate sufficient protrusive force to break the contacts between adhered cells in streams but can enter streams where the cells are weakly adherent. Cell lines lacking either the essential ($mlcE\sp-$) or regulatory ($mlcR\sp-$) myosin light chains have been used to distinguish the two functions of myosin. Neither cells show significant actin activated ATPase activity measured by in vivo or in vitro assays. The $mlcR\sp-$ cells are distorted and localized to the edges of wild type streams indistinguishable from $mhcA\sp-$ cells; the $mlcE\sp-$ cells are randomly mixed in the streams and are not distorted. The similarity of $mlcR\sp-$ and $mhcA\sp-$ cell behavior is consistent with the reduced amount of myosin in the cortex of $mlcR\sp-$ cells. The behavior of the $mlcE\sp-$ cells suggests that actin binding activity and/or normally localized filaments of myosin II in the absence of motor function is sufficient to stiffen the actin cortex in a manner similar to actin crosslinking proteins

Complication Rates, Hospital Size, and Bias in the CMS Hospital-Acquired Condition Reduction Program( )

in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

In 2016, Medicare's Hospital-Acquired Condition Reduction Program (HAC-RP) will reduce hospital payments by $364 million. Although observers have questioned the validity of certain HAC-RP measures, less attention has been paid to the determination of low-performing hospitals (bottom quartile) and the assignment of penalties. This study investigated possible bias in the HAC-RP by simulating hospitals' likelihood of being in the worst-performing quartile for 8 patient safety measures, assuming identical expected complication rates across hospitals. Simulated likelihood of being a poor performer varied with hospital size. This relationship depended on the measure's complication rate. For 3 of 8 measures examined, the equal-quality simulation identified poor performers similarly to empirical data (c-statistic approximately 0.7 or higher) and explained most of the variation in empirical performance by size (Efron's R> 0.85). The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services could address potential bias in the HAC-RP by stratifying by hospital size or using a broader "all-harm" measure
Robust Optimization Models for Inventory Control Under Demand and Lead Time Uncertainty by Andreas Thorsen( )

1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Calculating optimal inventory ordering policies for systems under supply and demand uncertainty is essential in supply chain management in order to reduce the costs of holding inventory and backlogging orders while maintaining customer satisfaction. This thesis develops a general methodology based on robust optimizationfor an inventory control problem subject to uncertain lead time and uncertaindemand. First, we focus on an inventory control problem where lead times are uncertain and demand is fixed. We present a robust optimization model of this problem where the uncertainty is in the recourse matrix and is of column-wise nature. Avariation of Benders' decomposition is proposed to compute robust optimal (i.e., best worst-case) policy parameters under several policies (static, basestock, and affinely adjustable). Insight is provided into the computation and performance of these policies. Then, we extend this approach to handle both demand and lead time uncertainty. In order to produce solutions which are not overly conservative, we investigate the performance of several types of uncertainty sets: budget uncertainty sets, central limit theorem-based uncertainty sets, and statistical hypothesis test-based uncertainty sets. Our numerical results indicate that our robust approach performs well compared to a sample average approximation approach in terms of stabilitymeasured by average cost, variance, and maximum cost. Finally, we develop models for inventory control under demand uncertainty where limited distributional information is available. In this section the support, mean, and an upper bound for the second moment is assumed to be known. Wedevelop a solution method to solve a deterministic reformulation of the minimaxexpectation problem, and prove that it converges to the optimal solution under mild conditions
