"Irena, une petite fille juive ballotée dans des orphelinats de Pologne, censée être née en juin 1938 à Czestochowa de parents tués sous les bombardements du début de la guerre. Au contact d'une famille varsovienne chaleureuse qui l'accueille régulièrement, elle retrouve quelques premières traces de ses parents disparus pendant la Shoah. Peu à peu, Irena en vient à se demander qui elle est vraiment et ce qu'ont vécu ses parents. Au fil des années, elle poursuit une quête identitaire angoissante qui se double, à partir de son installation en France en 1976, d'une enquête difficile dans diverses archives. C'est ainsi qu'elle peut découvrir le sort tragique de son père, de sa mère et celui des membres de sa famille, dont elle retrouve d'ailleurs quelques survivants. Varsovie, Paris, le nord de la France, l'Ukraine, Moscou, la Crimée, les Etats-Unis, autant de lieux porteurs de mémoire familiale. Que de découvertes ! Que de chocs émotionnels ! De joies et de tristesses mêlées...
