The Maori as he was: a brief account of Maori life as it was in pre-European days by Elsdon Best( Book )

48 editions published between 1924 and 2014 in English and Undetermined and held by 594 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The want of a brief account of Maori folk of New Zealand, of their ancient customs, beliefs, institutions, and industries has been long felt. Inquiries for such a work are frequently made. It is therefore hoped that this condensed account of the Maori as he was will serve the above-mentioned demand. The aim has been to touch on all phases of Maori life in pre-European days, and albeit detailed descriptions are impossible in so small a work, yet the reader will be enabled to picture Maori life as it was in neolithic times."--Preface p. Elsdon Best was a prolific recorder of pre-European Maori social life and material culture. His was a lifelong project underpinned by a belief that Maori were a people under threat from extinction, yet by the time of his death in 1931 Best's work had assumed new importance as it informed a Maori cultural renaissance. Today, the Elsdon Best books are accepted as classic studies. They remain a uniquely valuable record of traditional Maori culture, social customs and beliefs

Strasser explains Baehr v. Lewin, the precedent-setting case in Hawaii, and addresses the implications of state-by-state decisions to ban or recognize same-sex unions. He analyzes what it would mean to say that a policy violates the Equal Protection or Due Process Clauses of the Constitution, and compares biased policies that target gays and lesbians with those that victimize racial minorities. Strasser argues that the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is both unconstitutional and a public policy disaster. Arguably, it does not give states additional rights with respect to which marriages they need not recognize, but only with respect to which divorces they need not recognize. For example, DOMA seems to allow an individual to avoid a court-imposed duty to support an ex-spouse simply by changing his or her domicile. Moreover, Strasser argues, DOMA is an open invitation for states to demand exceptions that will wreak havoc in domestic relations law
