English words : history and structure by Robert P Stockwell( )

47 editions published between 2001 and 2013 in English and held by 2,239 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

English Words: History and Structure is concerned primarily with the learned vocabulary of English, the words borrowed from the classical languages. It surveys the historical events that define the layers of vocabulary in English, introduces some of the basic principles of linguistic analysis, and is a helpful manual for vocabulary discernment and enrichment. Exercises accompanying each chapter and further readings on recent loans and the legal and medical vocabulary of English will be available online in the near future. • Introduces students to some basic linguistic terms needed for the discussion of phonological and morphological changes accompanying word formation • Designed to lead students to a finer appreciation of their language and greater ability to recognize relationships between words and discriminate between meanings • An informative appendix discusses the history and usefulness of the best known British and American dictionaries • Online readings and exercises to deepen and strengthen knowledge acquired in the classroom

Patterns of Spanish pronunciation, a drillbook by J. Donald Bowen( Book )

28 editions published between 1960 and 1980 in English and Spanish and held by 481 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This drillbook concentrates on making the student aware of the nature of the differences between his English habits of speech and the Spanish habits he is trying to acquire. The extensive exercises are structured selectively in order of specific difficulties of pronunciation. In the major sections on intonation, vowels, and consonants, the authors rely on the development of several components to achieve mastery in the pronunciation of Spanish. They include: (1) notes about the differences between the comparable sounds of each language, (2) descriptions of the articulation of Spanish sounds not present in English, (3) the problems arranged in a hierarchy of importance from most important to least important, (4) a respelling of Spanish that symbolizes each problematic detail, (5) lists of items that illustrate the distribution of the sounds, and (6) extensive examples for classroom drill on all the problems examined. Integration of transformational theories on English syntax by Robert P Stockwell( Book )

15 editions published between 1968 and 1972 in English and held by 76 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The study attempts to bring together most of the information about the transformational analysis of the grammar of English that was available up through the summer of 1968, and to integrate it into a single coherent format. The format chosen is that of C. Fillmore (the 'Deep Case' hypothesis) combined with the 'Lexicalist' hypothesis of N. Chomsky. The areas of close investigation were the determiner system; pronominalization; negation; conjunction; relativization; complementation and nominalization; the systems of interrogative, passive, imperative, and cleft sentences; the genitive; the lexicon; and the ordering of rules for these areas of the grammar.
