The Supply-side effects of economic policy by Laurence H Meyer( Book )

5 editions published in 1981 in English and held by 362 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

On October 24 and 25, 1980, the Center for the Study of American Business at Washington University and the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis cosponsored their fifth annual conference, "The Supply-Side Effects of Economic Policy." This volume contains the papers and comments delivered at that conference. Proponents of "supply-side economics" have challenged the policy recommendations that emerge from "Keynesian" macroeconometric models. These models focus on the effects of economic policy on the demand for output. Supply-side economics, in contrast, emphasizes the response of output to changes in the supply of inputs. Decisions affecting the capital stock and employment-in particular, saving and investment decisions and labor force participation and hours decisions-are the focus of the supply-siders' attention. The 1980 conference examined most of the major themes associated with supply-side economics. The papers in Part I of this volume develop the theory underlying various supply-side propositions and present empirical evidence in support of some of these propositions. In Part II, the effect of taxes on capital formation and the effect of increased capital formation on output growth and inflation are examined. The effect of tax and transfer programs on labor supply, employment and unemployment are examined in Part III. The final section contains the special luncheon and dinner presentations

Improving money stock control : problems, solutions, and consequences by Laurence H Meyer( Book )

4 editions published in 1983 in English and held by 284 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

On October 30-31,1981, the Center for the Study of American Business and the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis cosponsored their sixth annual conference, "Improving Money Stock Control: Problems, Solutions, and Consequences." This book contains the papers and comments delivered at that conference. The Federal Reserve System has moved, over the last decade, toward setting policy in terms of explicit and publicly announced monetary aggre gate targets - specifically, growth ranges for alternative measures of the money supply. This conference, as the title suggests, was wide ranging in its discussions of monetary control. But rather than dealing with the merits of monetary aggregate targeting, its focus was instead on solving the problems associated with, and evaluating the consequences of, im proved monetary control. The initial paper outlines the current operating procedures followed by the Federal Reserve and suggests reforms to improve monetary control. The following three discussion papers in Part I critically examine the Fed's operating procedures. The two papers in Part II discuss the experi ence of other countries with monetary aggregate targeting - the United Kingdom and Switzerland, respectively - and Part III examines the con sequences of improved monetary control

The changing market in financial services : proceedings of the fifteenth annual Economic Policy Conference of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis by R. Alton Gilbert( Book )

6 editions published in 1992 in English and held by 174 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The articles and commentaries included in this volume were presented at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis' fifteenth annual economic policy conference. The conference focused on the effects of a variety of recent changes in the market for financial services in the United States. This market has been changing rapidly in recent years: business loans have become more liquid, as the market for loan sales grows. Banks have been permitted to participate in a limited form of interstate banking. Commercial banks have been given permission to offer additional underwriting services. The market for residential mortgage credit has been transformed, through securitization and the declining role of savings and loan associations. Foreign financial firms have taken a rising share of the market financial services. The papers in this volume describe these changes and examine implications for financial institutions and their customers
