"William Ewart Gladstone, FRS, FSS (29 December 1809 ? 19 May 1898), was a British Liberal statesman. In a career lasting over sixty years, he served as Prime Minister four separate times (1868?1874, 1880?1885, February?July 1886 and 1892?1894), more than any other person. From Weimar to Hitler : Germany, 1918-33 by E. J Feuchtwanger( Book )

31 editions published between 1993 and 2002 in English and held by 774 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Weimar has become synonymous with catastrophic political failure, the prelude to the greatest moral and material disasters of the twentieth century. This book shows that such failure was never inevitable and that options remained tantalisingly open right up to Hitler's assumption of power. The democratic regime was saddled with heavy burdens stemming from defeat and never enjoyed general acceptance and legitimacy. On the other hand, it encouraged for the first time in German history expectations of a high level of welfare, individual rights and modern social practices, which were at least partially fulfilled. The period of relative prosperity was, however, too short, the return of crisis too severe and the resulting demoralisation too profound to save democracy. The author draws a compelling picture of a society frequently in turmoil, yet remarkably creative and innovative, but finally overwhelmed by a tide of irrationality and barbarism. He makes full use of the extensive sources and secondary literature available in German

Disraeli was a novelist as well as a politician, and he showed in his political life a novelist's command of the potent image. Feuchtwanger's livelynew study does justice to Disraeli's controversial life and ambiguous political legacy, as well as shedding light on the political development of Victorian Britain
Bismarck by E. J Feuchtwanger( Book )

28 editions published between 2002 and 2014 in English and held by 540 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Bismarck was arguably the most important figure in nineteenth-century European history after 1815. In this new biography, Edgar Feuchtwanger reassesses Bismarck's significance as a historical figure. He traces his development from a typical Junker, a reactionary and conservative, into the white revolutionary who recast European affairs more drastically than anyone since Napoleon. Feuchtwanger's lucid account demythologizes the German leader without demonizing him. This book leaves the reader with a strongly-etched portrait of one of the decisive makers of the modern world."--Jacket

Albert and Victoria : the rise and fall of the house of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha by E. J Feuchtwanger( Book )

8 editions published between 2006 and 2007 in English and held by 232 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"When Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha married his cousin, the young Queen Victoria in 1840, it was not only a match whose fertility and personal devotion provided a model for the queen's subjects, it was also a triumph of dynastic politics. It drew the couple deeply into European politics, where their personal and family relationships with many of the rulers often had repercussions at home. Despite the death of Albert in 1861, the marriage of Victoria's children into Europe's royal houses continued the dynastic theme. It was a tragedy for Germany and Europe that Vicky, Victoria's eldest daughter, and her husband, the heir to the German throne were unable to master Bismarck. Albert and Victoria is a portrait of a marriage. It also traces Albert to his unhappy family roots in Coburg and shows how important his attitudes, most of them shared by Victoria, were in their joint dynastic enterprise."--Jacket
