This book provides an overview of research on current developments and problems in the training of teachers. A full discussion of the task of conceptualizing teaching skills leads to a critical review of recent research into the effects of various types of teaching behavior upon pupils. The book questions whether or not there are teaching behaviors so closely related to pupil growth that they can be justifiably included in programs for teacher education. There are suggestions for designing correlational studies, analyzing the results, and selecting variables. Two chapters are devoted to effective methods of training teachers to produce pupils who can be self-directive and to a comparison of teacher-controlled approaches with individualized programs. Another chapter suggests different approaches to the problem of shaping the attitudes of teachers. The book concludes with a framework of concepts with which to analyze designs for teacher education programs, using a number of designs for teacher education as a basis, especially the comprehensive elementary teacher education models sponsored by the U. Written to emphasize the harmful consequences of placing the total burden of bringing up the young on the family and the school, to suggest the coordination of adult society with schooling, to renew an interest in cognitive and ethical learning, and to emphasize the need for professional competence, this book discusses the alienation of youth from the adult society in relation to school reform. Implicit in the analysis of schooling are changes in curricula, training programs for school personnel, administrative and organizational practices, conditions for utilizing professional competence, and fiscal policy. Recommendations for implementation include involving youth in the world of work, establishing minimum achievement floors including basic learning for succeeding in the adult world, reducing school curricula to minimum essentials for reaching basic achievement floors, emphasizing diagnostic skills in preservice teacher education, defining principals' tasks to emphasize improving instruction, creating minicourses for socialization to the adult world, setting up an accounting system for all youth, equalizing funds for schools through federal support, improving teacher training and assignments to allow for the exercise of professional competence, and establishing national coordination of school reform. A perspective is given and recommendations are made for restructuring education personnel development with major emphasis on preservice teacher education. Issues facing teacher education are put in a socio-historical context. It is stated that teacher training has been largely separated from the public school system, and that training has been overloaded with pedagogical theory before the prospective teacher's experience is broad enough to absorb it. The potential institutional arrangements required for a professional school of pedagogy are examined. A proposed program in pedagogical education is presented, with its focus on the ability to do the job for which training is given. This program is mainly field-based with the campus serving for basic field preparation. Types of knowledge are identified and their characteristics discussed by showing how each type functions in teaching behavior. What is known about how to teach skills and concepts to teachers is delineated. The final section presents ways to bring about the proposed changes. The role and responsibilities of college faculty and what sort of coalitions will be necessary to effect new policies and programs of pedagogical education are discussed. (Jd)
