Principles of mechanics by
J. L Synge(
Book
)
71 editions published between 1942 and 2013 in 3 languages and held by 1,433 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In a sense, this is a book for the beginner in mechanics, but in another sense, it is not. From the time people make their first movements, crude ideas on force, mass, and motion take shape in the mind. This body of ideas might be reduced to some order in high school, but not necessarily. There is rather an accumulation of miscellaneous facts bearing on mechanics, some mathematical and some experimental, until a state is reached where the student is in danger of being repelled by the subject, as a chaotic jumble which is neither mathematics nor physics. This book is intended primarily for students at this stage. The authors' ambition is to reveal mechanics as an orderly selfcontained subject. It stands out as a model of clarity among all the theories of deductive science. Towards the end of the book, advanced subjects such as Lagrange's equations and the special theory of relativity are included

Tensor calculus by
J. L Synge(
Book
)
92 editions published between 1934 and 2012 in 3 languages and held by 1,162 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Mathematicians, theoretical physicists, and engineers unacquainted with tensor calculus are at a serious disadvantage in several fields of pure and applied mathematics. They are cut off from the study of Reimannian geometry and the general theory of relativity. Even in Euclidean geometry and Newtonian mechanics (particularly the mechanics of continua), they are compelled to work in notations which lack the compactness of tensor calculus. This classic text is a fundamental introduction to the subject for the beginning student of absolute differential calculus, and for those interested in the applications of tensor calculus to mathematical physics and engineering. Tensor Calculus contains eight chapters. The first four deal with the basic concepts of tensors, Riemannian spaces, Riemannian curvature, and spaces of constant curvature. The next three chapters are concerned with applications to classical dynamics, hydrodynamics, elasticity, electromagnetic radiation, and the theorems of Stokes and Green. In the final chapter, an introduction is given to nonRiemannian spaces including such subjects as affine, Weyl, and projective spaces. There are two appendixes which discuss the reduction of a quadratic form and multiple integration. At the conclusion of each chapter a summary of the most important formulas and a set of exercises are given. More exercises are scattered throughout the text. The special and general theory of relativity is briefly discussed where applicable
