The Oxford history of India by Vincent Arthur Smith( Book )

"Critics have decried the anti-globalization movement as an aimless assortment of causes. Arguably, the most consistent target of activist attention has been the new industrial sweatshop, which has become a byword for corporate-led globalization. In recent years, the world's lowest paying jobs have been the subject of high-profile media coverage. As a result of headline-seeking campaigns, exposes of sweatshop conditions at home and abroad are now a stable of investigative reporting and public attention, and this scrutiny has helped to put fair labor standards on the negotiating table of world trade agreements." "In this new book, scholar and anti-sweatshop activist Andrew Ross shows how and why the movement has been able to shake the confidence of corporate and financial elites accustomed to a free hand in setting the rules of the global economy. In addition to analyzing the achievements of a decade, he presents case studies from around the world: the mercurial growth of China's export trade; the reliance of Italy's fashion and design industries on the underground economy; the health hazards faced by Asian microchip workers and recyclers of electronic waste; and the controversy over Nike's contract with Manchester United, the world's leading soccer brand. Arguing that the fight for fair labor is not solely a geographically distant matter, played out only in the poorest corners of the world, he also shows how it applies to the degradation of white-collar professions as the "casualization" of work in the domestic economy gathers ever more steam. This partisan inquiry into the cruelty and indignity of modern workplaces is informed by evidence that critique and action can bring results."--BOOK JACKET

History of India by A. V. Williams Jackson( Book )

9 editions published in 1907 in English and held by 374 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Sophisticated societies have risen and fallen in India for more than four millennia, from the urbanized Harappa culture to today's Republic of India, the world's largest democracy. Because of its natural wealth, India has long been a tempting prize for invaders, yet foreign forces such as the Mughal Empire and the British did not destroy India's vibrant spirit. Rather, external influences often became absorbed into the mix of different peoples, languages, religions, and regional traditions, creating a lasting culture of great depth. This book recounts the history of India and much of present-day Pakistan and Bangladesh as well as the factors that have contributed to India's epic economic successes in recent times. Memorable images texture the narrative and vividly animate the story of this unique nation
Rambles and recollections of an Indian official by W. H Sleeman( Book )

Lieutenant-Colonel William Henry Sleeman (1788-1856) spent his entire career in India as an army officer and later as a magistrate and resident. He was best known for his fight to suppress the activities of 'thugs', bands of criminals who attacked, robbed and often murdered innocent travellers. By the time of the publication of this two-volume work in 1844, Sleeman had lived in India for more than thirty years. In Volume 2, Sleeman examines many issues related to governance, such as land, tax, military discipline and the justice system, and he recounts some of the extensive conversations he had with Indians on these matters. His travels in this volume takes him through Gwalior, Dholpur, Agra and Bharatpur, and the book includes plates of some of the spectacular buildings that he visits
