Professor Ziman's classic textbook on the theory of solids was first pulished in 1964. This paperback edition is a reprint of the second edition, which was substantially revised and enlarged in 1972. The value and popularity of this textbook is well attested by reviewers' opinions and by the existence of several foreign language editions, including German, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, Polish and Russian. The book gives a clear exposition of the elements of the physics of perfect crystalline solids. In discussing the principles, the author aims to give students an appreciation of the conditions

Public knowledge: an essay concerning the social dimension of science by J. M Ziman( Book )

34 editions published between 1968 and 1981 in English and Undetermined and held by 843 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this 1974 book a practising scientist and gifted expositor sets forth an exciting point of view on the nature of science and how it works. Professor Ziman argues that the true goal of all scientific research is to contribute to the consensus of universally accepted knowledge. He explores the philosophical, psychological and sociological consequences of the principle, and explains how, in practice, the consensus is established and how the work of the individual scientist becomes a part of it. The intellectual form of scientific knowledge is determined by the need for the scientist to communicate his findings and to make them acceptable to others. Professor Ziman's essay, being written in plain English, and requiring only the slenderest knowledge of science, can (and should) be read by any educated person; as he says 'all genuine scientific procedures of thought and argument are essentially the same as those of everyday life'"--Publisher's description

Real science : what it is, and what it means by J. M Ziman( Book )

44 editions published between 2000 and 2008 in 4 languages and held by 645 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Scientists and 'anti-scientists' alike need a more realistic image of science. The traditional mode of research, academic science, is not just a 'method': it is a distinctive culture, whose members win esteem and employment by making public their findings. Fierce competition for credibility is strictly regulated by established practices such as peer review. Highly specialized international communities of independent experts form spontaneously and generate the type of knowledge we call 'scientific' - systematic, theoretical, empirically tested, quantitative, and so on. Ziman shows that these familiar 'philosophical' features of scientific knowledge are inseparable from the ordinary cognitive capabilities and peculiar social relationships of its producers. This wide angled close-up of the natural and human sciences recognizes their unique value, whilst revealing the limits of their rationality, reliability and universal applicability. It also shows how, for better or worse, the new 'post-academic' research culture of teamwork, accountability, etc. is changing these supposedly eternal philosophical characteristics."--Jacket
An introduction to science studies : the philosophical and social aspects of science and technology by J. M Ziman( Book )

34 editions published between 1984 and 2001 in English and German and held by 600 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The purpose of this book is to give a coherent account of the different perspectives on science and technology that are normally studied under various disciplinary heads such as philosophy of science, sociology of science and science policy. It is intended for students embarking on courses in these subjects and assumes no special knowledge of any science. It is written in a direct and simple style, and technical language is introduced very sparingly. As various perspectives are sketched out in this book, the reader moves towards a consistent conception of contemporary science as a rapidly changing social institution that has already grown out of its traditional forms and plays a central role in society at large. It will appeal to students in a wide range of scientific disciplines and complement well Professor Ziman's earlier books
The Physics of metals: by P. B Hirsch( Book )

50 editions published between 1966 and 2010 in English and held by 586 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

By convention a Festschrift is a collection of pretty 'essays' by a miscellany of scholars, presented to an older and greater scholar at some significant milestone of his life. The present work conforms to this convention only in that it was conceived as a tribute to Professor Sir Nevill Mott upon the occasion of his 60th birthday. The prime intention was to write a modern version of 'Mott and Jones' - a comprehensive and up-to-date account of the Theory of Metals and Alloys. But much has been discovered in 30 years, and this would have stretched to many thousands of pages. We therefore decided to concentrate on the two major topics where our interests mainly lie - the electronic structure and electrical properties of metals, on the one hand, and the mechanical properties of solids on the other. In the end, each topic grew and diverged into a separate book
Electrons in metals; a short guide to the Fermi surface by J. M Ziman( Book )

Puzzles, problems and enigmas : occasional pieces on the human aspects of science by J. M Ziman( Book )

17 editions published between 1981 and 2010 in English and held by 571 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Philosophical puzzles, political problems, ethical enigmas - science has them all. Do some theories stink? Is research a gentlemanly art or a tough professional game? What happens to scientists who go gaga? Can scientific knowledge be treated as a commercial commodity? How can research be made relevant to national development? Is war good for physics? What should scientists do about Soviet dissidents? How does information become knowledge? Why bother about examinations? These and many other topics on the human side of science are discussed in this wide-ranging book, originally published in 1981. As an experienced theoretical physicist, Professor Ziman speaks about science from the inside. As a long-time advocate of social responsibility in science, technology and education, he looks critically into science from the outside. He exposes for the layman, with wit and nerve, some of the most challenging issues of the time
Prometheus bound : science in a dynamic steady state by J. M Ziman( Book )

23 editions published between 1994 and 2010 in 3 languages and held by 568 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This trenchant analysis of a deep-rooted historical process does not assume any technical knowledge of the natural sciences, or their history, philosophy, sociology, or politics. It is addressed to everybody who is concerned about the future of science and its place in society
Teaching and learning about science and society by J. M Ziman( Book )

27 editions published between 1980 and 2008 in 5 languages and held by 521 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

'Science, Technology, and Society' - STS - has become a major educational theme. There are many courses in schools, universities and other institutions, dealing with all sorts of topics such as the history of science, energy policy, industrial innovation, technology assessment, Third World development, scientific method, and so on. But what is this subject really about? Why should it be taught? Who should study it? What should they learn? How should the subject be approached? Who should teach it? These questions are being asked by both teachers and students in many fields of science, engineering, medicine, social studies, and the humanities. This informal account of the rationale of STS education shows how many diverse factors are involved - the philosophy and sociology of science and education, social and cultural objectives, political ideologies, vocational needs, scholarly standards, institutional capabilities, et cetera, not to mention the practical realities of teaching and learning at all levels

Ever since Darwin, scholars have noted that cultural entities such as languages, laws and theories seem to evolve through variation, selection and replication. These essays consider whether this comparison is just a metaphor
