The effect of fertilization on sulphur dioxide damage to conifers in industrial and built-up areas by Erik Björkman( Book )

10 editions published between 1969 and 1970 in 3 languages and held by 32 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The influence of SO, on pine (Pinus siluestris) and spruce (Picea abies) has been studied as well in laboratory experiments with different doses of the gas and under different environmental conditions as in field experiments in some industrial districts and in a built-up area near Stockholm. The purpose of the investigation was to t r y t o find out whether it is possible to improve the conditions of the trees by fertilizing so that the susceptibility to gas damages can be reduced. The fertilizers were N and NPK respectively. An evident tendency to recovery of the trees could be seen after fertilizing of stands that were continuously exposed to SO,. 4ny recovery of the trees in shallow soils which had been fertilized with nitrogen could not be observed. In heavily SO,-damaged stands one can very often find single trees not having been affected at all. Further experiments on genetic resistance in pine populations exposed to SO, are going on
Mycorrhiza and tree nutrition in poor forest soils. Mykorrhiza och näringsupptagning hos skogsträd i mager skogsjord by Erik Björkman( Book )

9 editions published between 1970 and 1971 in English and German and held by 31 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

When fertilizing forest trees with nitrogen a great quantity is bound in organic humus compounds and cannot be utilized by the trees. Extensive reserves of hound nitrogen also exist in comparatively poor forest soils. However, it has been found that it is possible to release these reserves by inoculation with certain soil fungi of the litter-decomposing type. It does - not seem irnprobablr that such nleasilres can represent a biological alternative to chernical fertilization. In the present paper it is shown how Boletus srrbfome~~fosutsh,a t normally is a mj corrhiza forming fungus, can stimulate the development of pine plants, h physiological strain of this fungus is used which has the ability to decompose Iitler. The typical mycorrhiza fungus Rolefus bovirzus also stin~ulated the plant growth to a certain extent. However, the stimulating effect ceased when strong fertilization was used or when the light intensity mas reduced. Constant ~lluminationr esulted in the plants developing well and with good mj corrhiza formation. When the period of illumination was reduced to 1G hours a day the plants developed less vigorously and the mycorrhiza formalion was reduced

Studies of root competition in a poor pine forest by supply of labelled nitrogen and phosphorus by Erik Björkman( Book )

6 editions published in 1971 in English and Swedish and held by 22 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The phenomenon known as root cornpetltion ln lichen pine forests has been studied by means of applj ing ammoniurn sulphate and potassium phosphate labelled with Nlj and P32 respectively to a plot with a seed tree (Pinus srluestris) in the centre. Under the tree there was a typical competition zone. Both Callnna ur~lgarisa nd Vaccirliirm uitis idnea proved to be at least as efficient absorbers of nutrients as the pine plants in the natural regeneration under the seed tree. In the vegetation inmediately outside the fertilized area only traces of the addec! nutrients could be found. An analjsis of the root distribution revealed that the suppressed pine plants in the competition zone had their roots spread chiefly in the deeper layers while the root s~stemo f the older tree dominated the upper layers where the supply of nutrients available to vegetation is largest. At a distance of 5-7 in from the tree, where its competition began to decrease, the small plants were found to have a considerably more superficial root system than ~vhatth e? had nearer to the tree
