Relating work and education by Dyckman W Vermilye( Book )

13 editions published in 1977 in English and held by 702 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The relationship between education and work is examined in relation to improving the quality of life. Part one provides a philosophical framework in which the authors reject the idea that work and education should be oriented toward porducing goods and making money, but should contribute to the growth and development of the workers. Part two covers work-education issues with the emphasis on work (recurrent education, education in industry, and aspects of behavior related to job success that are largely ignored in education). Part three examines work-education questions that emphasize education, such as vocations and the liberal arts, core curriculum, and licensure. Part four takes up the bread-and-butter issues most common in the popular press. Part five offers various work-education plans for the future, stressing the importance of putting the people before the process. Contributors include: Mortimer J. Adler, Fred Best, Burton J. Bledstein, Howard R. Bowen, Jr., Ernest L. Boyer, Arthur W. Chickering, Russell Edgerton, Thomas F. Green, Willis W. Harman, Hazel Henderson, Daniel M. Kasper, George O. The educational potential of residence halls at the University of Florida by Dyckman W Vermilye( Book )

2 editions published in 1957 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A different implication to be drawn from this report, and from the assumption that residence halls staffs can best serve the ends of general education, concerns the graduate school programs for people who want to enter the field of student personnel. Many graduate training programs from which residence halls personnel come are designed to equip individuals with counseling and administrative skills, and with a philosophy that might be useful in any of several different student personnel positions on a campus. The training institutions should clearly understand the purposes and functions to be performed by their graduates if they are to provide useful educational experiences. The graduate schools might consider, for example, how much attention to administrative and housekeeping skills and theory they want to include in a program for future residence halls personnel if they hope to place their graduates in positions of educational significance on college campuses. Similar attention might be given to the kind and amount of training to be given in the area of group education. It is possible that some of the emphasis in research in the area of group dynamics related to democratic work groups might be directed to research in theory and techniques for providing the effective general educational experiences for groups which have been proposed for the residence hall staff member
