The psychology of perception by M. D Vernon( Book )

112 editions published between 1962 and 1982 in 5 languages and held by 1,148 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

When we look at the world with our eyes, do we see it as it really is? In this authoritative study the former Professor of Psychology at the University of Reading shows how, behind the retina of the eye, many more fallible mental processes cause errors and inconsistencies to creep into our perceptions. Here is a non-technical outline of the psychological processes which have been shown to be involved in our visual perceptions of things around us. These perceptions of shape, colour, movement and space develop gradually from infancy upwards. Finally this book, which is based on over thirty years of psychological research at Cambridge and elsewhere, shows how the perceptions of different people are not always alike : they vary with attention, interest and individual personality factors

Human Motivation by M. D Vernon( Book )

39 editions published between 1969 and 1975 in 4 languages and held by 807 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Motivation is the hidden urge within us which impels us to behave in certain ways. This urge may be purely instinctive, like the need for food, it may arise from a rational decision to achieve a certain end or it may be the result of a combination of both these factors. Motivation is difficult to study directly, and its nature has to be inferred from a range of indirect sources. It develops in childhood, and from then on it is a vital part of our everyday experience. First published in 1969, Professor Vernon's book is an exposition of the fundamental psychology of human motivation, as opposed to motivational processes in animals, with which most books at the time of publication dealt. The principal effects of motivational frustration and conflict are also discussed. Experimental evidence is introduced whenever possible. The author has here drawn on her considerable experience as a lecturer and teacher to provide students with a sound basic knowledge of this important topic in psychology.--Publisher's description

Visual perception and its relation to reading : an annotated bibliography by M. D Vernon( Book )

19 editions published between 1966 and 1973 in English and held by 214 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The lengthy annotations in this bibliography of recent research on visual perception and its relation to reading are classified in four main groupings: (1) development of perception of complex forms and attention to significant details, (2) the ability to perceive visual form in relation to reading, (3) perception of letters and words, and (4) sequential memory and sequential grapheme-phoneme correspondence. Works listed have been selected from well-known psychological and educational journals and from a few books. The items within the bibliography are placed in a logical order, that is, the annotations are so arranged as to relate to one another and to the sectional introductions. (Author/TO)
