The story is set in 1960 and 1961, a moment of high political cold war tension between the East Bloc and the West, a time when many thousands of people were leaving the young German Democratic Republic (the GDR) every day in order to seek better lives in West Germany, or escape the political ideology of the new country that promoted the "farmer and peasant" state over a state run by intellectuals or capitalists
No place on earth by Christa Wolf( Book )

123 editions published between 1979 and 2015 in 4 languages and held by 1,725 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

151 editions published between 1976 and 2012 in 8 languages and held by 1,351 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The quest for Christa T by Christa Wolf( Book )

130 editions published between 1968 and 2013 in 4 languages and held by 792 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The story of an East German woman who reached adolescence during World War II, embraced the new world order, had her enthusiasm and idealism gradually corroded by the crass materialists around her, married and had a family, and suddenly died a relatively young woman. Her heroism, that of the ordinary, intelligent and sensitive private person, becomes the story of a whole generation. The quest for Christa T. has no overt political theme, yet it is imbued with the awareness of political implications that only a socialist writer can have

Parting from phantoms : selected writings, 1990-1994 by Christa Wolf( Book )

3 editions published between 1997 and 1998 in English and held by 571 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The most prominent writer of the German Democratic Republic and its most famous cultural export, Wolf was called East Germany's "Mother Confessor" and treated by the West German press as emblematic of GDR intellectuals. After reunification, Wolf published a novella titled What Remains, which was bitterly attacked by the press as a belated attempt to establish herself as a victim of the Stasi (the GDR's secret police). The criticism discredited Wolf as a cultural hero in the eyes of many Germans and plunged her into a deep personal crisis. Parting from Phantoms shows Wolf coming to terms with her ambiguous past and an unforgiving present
August by Christa Wolf( Book )

34 editions published between 2012 and 2015 in 6 languages and held by 525 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Christa Wolf was arguably the best-known and most influential writer in the former East Germany. Having grown up during the Nazi regime, she and her family were forced to flee their home like many others, nearly starving to death in the process. Her earliest novels were controversial because they contained veiled criticisms of the Communist regime which landed her on government watch lists. Her past continued to permeate her work and her life, as she said, "You can only fight sorrow when you look it in the eye." August is Christa Wolf's last piece of fiction, written in a single sitting as an anniversary gift to her husband. In it, she revisits her stay at a tuberculosis hospital in the winter of 1946, a real life event that was the inspiration for the closing scenes of her 1976 novel Patterns of Childhood
Leibhaftig : Erzählung by Christa Wolf( Book )

In the flesh : a novel by Christa Wolf( Book )

5 editions published between 2004 and 2007 in English and held by 317 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Suffering severe abdominal pain, a woman is rushed to the emergency room of a decrepit urban hospital. Her soaring temperature, her deepening distress, her body's resistance to medicine all confound her doctors, who operate repeatedly." "Drifting in and out of consciousness, she endures a fever dream in which the boundaries between wakefulness, memory, and delusion blur then totally dissolve. Old friends and comforting strangers materialize at her bedside, and as they talk to her, and as the nurses poke and prod, her sense of self, of being an "I" who acts rather than a "she" who is acted upon, begins to slip away. Gurney rides through the hospital's windowless corridors become fantastic travels through the halls of hell. Remembered snatches of Goethe and of "upbuilding" Communist propaganda provide ironic running commentary on her predicament, for the scene, half real, half hallucinated, is the former East Berlin; the time, just before the fall of the Wall."--Jacket
