Every person's guide to antioxidants by John R Smythies( )

5 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 2,496 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"What are antioxidants? What do they do? Should you be taking them? How much is enough, or too much? Dr. John Smythies explores these and other questions you need to have answered about antioxidants in Every Person's Guide to Antioxidants."--BOOK JACKET. "Smythies evaluates the current scientific work on this subject in detail and suggests that a high proportion of diseases can be prevented, or their onset delayed, by proper dietary intake of antioxidants. He examines the professional debate over whether this necessary intake should be achieved by eating more fruits and vegetables in the diet or by taking supplements. Smythies surveys the toxicity of antioxidants and under what circumstances they should be given with caution or not at all. He also discusses whether medical supervision is necessary for someone planning to take supplements, and lists good sources of antioxidants in fruits and vegetables."--Jacket
The dynamic neuron : a comprehensive survey of the neurochemical basis of synaptic plasticity by John R Smythies( )

12 editions published in 2002 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,510 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The traditional model of synapses as fixed structures has been replaced by a dynamic one in which synapses are constantly being deleted and replaced. This book, written by a leading researcher on the neurochemistry of schizophrenia, integrates material from neuroscience and cell biology to provide a comprehensive account of our current knowledge of the neurochemical basis of synaptic plasticity. The book presents the evidence for synaptic plasticity, an account of the dendritic spine and the glutamate synapse with a focus on redox mechanisms, and the biochemical basis of the Hebbian synapse. It discusses the role of endocytosis, special proteins, and local protein synthesis. Additional topics include volume transmission, arachidonic acid signaling, hormonal modulation, and psychological stress. Finally, the book considers pharmacological and clinical implications of current research, particularly with reference to schizophrenia and Alzheimer's disease

International review of neurobiology( )

in English and held by 761 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Over the last thirty years understanding of neuronal transmission and plasticity under normal and pathological conditions has improved greatly. These advances have been made possible by the multidisciplinary approach used by neuroscientists in their researches." "This volume of the International Review of Neurobiology provides a broad overview of these important new advances in the field of Neuropharmacology. International contributors discuss topics including endocannabinoid function, pain, stress, astrocytes and new possibilities for treatments of neurological diseases with neuropharmacological approaches." --Book Jacket
Brain and mind; modern concepts of the nature of mind by John R Smythies( Book )

31 editions published between 1965 and 2015 in English and held by 634 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Presenting some modern views on the problem of the nature of mind and its relationship to the brain, this book, published in 1965, brings together contributors from various disciplines which are affected by this issue. Coming from different philosophical outlooks as well as subjects, these contributors also comment on each other's' chapters with a view of developing thought on the approaches to the problem. The theory of mind-brain relationship is vital to human interest and has been in debate throughout western thought over centuries, split mainly into dualist and monistic theories. These dis

The claustrum : structural, functional, and clinical neuroscience by John R Smythies( )

10 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 352 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The present day is witnessing an explosion of our understanding of how the brain works at all levels, in which complexity is piled on complexity, and mechanisms of astonishing elegance are being continually discovered. This process is most developed in the major areas of the brain, such as the cortex, thalamus, and striatum. The Claustrum instead focuses on a small, remote, and, until recently, relatively unknown area of the brain. In recent years, researchers have come to believe that the claustrum is concerned with consciousness, a bold hypothesis supported by the claustrum's two-w
The neurological foundations of psychiatry; an outline of the mechanisms of emotion, memory, learning, and the organization of behaviour, with particular regard to the limbic system by John R Smythies( Book )

Amines and schizophrenia; [papers] by Harold Edwin Himwich( Book )

14 editions published between 1867 and 1967 in English and held by 289 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Amines and Schizophrenia is a collection of articles that survey and discuss the biochemical basis present, if any, in schizophrenia, focusing on the role of certain amines. <br>The book discusses certain hypotheses dealing with the field of bio-chemistry as the basis for diseases such as schizophrenia, manic-depressive psychosis, and related diseases. Discussions start with the properties of mescaline, because the psychotic effect of the drug has some aspects similar to that of a schizophrenic syndrome. One paper examines the presence of certain amines, such as norepinephrine, dopamine, and
Biological psychiatry; a review of recent advances by John R Smythies( Book )

18 editions published between 1968 and 2014 in English and Undetermined and held by 278 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Biological Psychiatry: A Review of Recent Advances describes the developments in biological psychiatry. This book discusses the theories in the complex field of human disease, particularly psychiatric disease. Organized into six chapters, this book begins with an overview of the etiology and genetic basis of schizophrenia. This text then examines the various physiological and biochemical variables in schizophrenics. Other chapters consider the two types of depression, namely, reactive and endogenous. This book discusses as well the criteria of what symptom complexes constitute a particular psy
The neuromodulators by John R Smythies( )

9 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 231 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Glutamate and GABA are the main information carrying neurotransmitters in the brain. Their action is modulated by a further series of small molecules called neuromodulators. The major neuromodulators in the brain are acetylcholine (both muscarinic and nicotinic), dopamine, norepinephrine, epinephrine and serotonin. These have an enormous range of functions in a wide variety of brain mechanisms. This book attempts to give a general overview of this field with a section devoted to each of these. Each section starts with anatomy, both structural and functional. The various types of receptors for these agents are described, and then the effects of stimulating these receptors. These receptors trigger a variety of electrical reactions that generally involve potassium, sodium or calcium channels. Also reviewed are other receptors that trigger a wide variety of post-synaptic signaling cascades that influence a large number of neuronal functions including receptor sensitivity, synaptic plasticity and gene manipulation. Finally the relevance of these systems to disease states is detailed.; There are many reviews of individual neuromodulators but this is the only book where one author attempts to cover the whole field

Direct versus indirect realism: a neurophilosophical debate on consciousness. by John R Smythies( )

5 editions published in 2018 in English and held by 167 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Direct versus Indirect Realism: A Neurophilosophical Debate on Consciousness brings together leading neuroscientists and philosophers to explain and defend their theories on consciousness. The book offers a one-of-a-kind look at the radically opposing theories concerning the nature of the objects of immediate perception-whether these are distal physical objects or phenomenal experiences in the conscious mind. Each side-neuroscientists and philosophers-offers accessible, comprehensive explanations of their points-of-view, with each side also providing a response to the other that offers a unique approach on opposing positions. It is the only book available that combines thorough discussion of the arguments behind both direct and indirect realism in a single resource, and is required reading for neuroscientists, neurophilosophers, cognitive scientists and anyone interested in conscious perception and the mind-brain connection
