La libertad es siempre y exclusivamente libertad para quien piensa de manera diferente.» Antes que Orwell y Koestler, antes incluso que Victor Serge, estuvo Rosa Luxemburgo, una firme defensora de la democracia y, en palabras de Schumpeter, «una de las críticas más implacables de las prácticas bolcheviques». El carácter polémico y visionario de este sorprendente texto, escrito en la cárcel en 1918 y publicado de manera póstuma, se comprende fácilmente si tenemos en cuenta que, hasta la Gran Purga de finales de la década de 1930, la fascinación occidental por la Revolución rusa era incluso mayor que la actual. Como el propio Koestler recordaba en sus memorias, hasta entonces todavía no era posible «descubrir la realidad que se escondía tras el mito»; incluso «algunos liberales moderados que desdeñaban a Marx y aborrecían la violencia regresaban de una visita guiada por Rusia con una actitud cambiada y cordial hacia “el gran experimento soviético”». Pues bien, Rosa Luxemburgo no solo vislumbró en 1918 la futura deriva totalitaria de dicho experimento, sino que además alertó de los peligros del nacionalismo, por lo que el presente ensayo cobra una renovada vigencia. «Me gustaría creer», dice Hannah Arendt en el prólogo, «que todavía hay esperanza de un reconocimiento tardío de la figura y la labor de Rosa Luxemburgo […] “Su pensamiento pertenece allí donde la historia de las ideas políticas se enseña con rigor”»
