"The story of religion in colonial America has been told many times and with many different accents. This book dares tell it once again, this time with the colonial meetinghouse of early New England in sharp focus. The object is not to repeat the familiar outline of early religious history, nor to exhibit the meetinghouse as a period piece, but so far as it is possible to put in back on Meetinghouse Hill, where it stood in the day of its authority, and, by recalling typical procedures in relation to various aspects of community life, to suggest attitudes which it helped to establish and patterns of group action which it helped to make habitual."--Preface

American broadside verse from imprints of the 17th and 18th centuries by Ola Elizabeth Winslow( Book )

15 editions published between 1930 and 1974 in English and held by 353 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The specimens reproduced in this volume illustrate the several kinds of verse printed in broadside in America from about the middle of the seventeenth century, the date of the first extant imprints, to the end of the eighteenth century, when the newspaper had put an end to this type of imprint as a vital response to contemporay life. A few later imprints are included, but only of verses known to have been printed in broadside before the end of the eighteenth century. For convenience of reference and comparison, the broadsides included are grouped according to their general subject matter. The selections chosen represent the earliest available imprint in each of the several groups, and enough later specimens to indicate range and diversity of treatment." -- Preface
Jonathan Edwards : basic writings by Jonathan Edwards( Book )

8 editions published between 1966 and 1978 in English and held by 304 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The writings selected for this Meridian edition form the principle legacy of one of the most remarkable thinkers our country has produced. As a Puritan divine, Jonathan Edwards represented a major influence in American religious life; as a metaphysician, he was the first American to gain an international reputation as a human being, he imbued every page he wrote with profound personal commitment and moral concern. These selections extend from his first essays as a youthful prodigy to the great sermons and treatises of his maturity; they offer both a fascinating record of spiritual evolution and a body of intellectual achievement of truly enduring import
