In this critical edition, Stephen Voss establishes the text of the magnificent Socratic correspondence between Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz and Antoine Arnauld, provides an accurate English translation of the French text, and includes full apparatus helpful to student and scholar alike. The philosopher, physicist, and mathematician Leibniz presents the philosopher and theologian Arnauld with a unique new metaphysics and hones his ongoing thinking on the critical responses he receives. The result is a dialogue capable of illuminating metaphysical thought even now

15 editions published between 1996 and 2003 in English and Spanish and held by 395 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Antoine Arnauld and Pierre Nicole were philosophers and theologians associated with Port-Royal Abbey, a centre of the Catholic Jansenist movement in seventeenth-century France. Their enormously influential Logic or the Art of Thinking, which went through five editions in their lifetimes, treats topics in logic, language, theory of knowledge and metaphysics, and also articulates the response of 'heretical' Jansenist Catholicism to orthodox Catholic and Protestant views on grace, free will and the sacraments. In attempting to combine the categorical theory of the proposition with a Cartesian account of knowledge, their Logic represents the classical view of judgment which inspired the modern transformation in logic and semantic theory by Frege, Russell, Wittgenstein and recent philosophers. This edition presents a new translation of the text, together with a historical introduction and suggestions for further reading

44 editions published between 1683 and 2011 in French and Undetermined and held by 349 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Logic, or, The art of thinking : in which, besides the common, are contain'd many excellent new rules, very profitable for directing of reason and acquiring of judgment in things as well relating to the instruction of a mans self, as of others by Antoine Arnauld( )

23 editions published between 1685 and 2012 in English and held by 253 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The common treatises of logic are almost without number, and while every author strives to add something of his own, sometimes little to the purpose, sometimes altogether from the matter, the Art is become, not only obscure and tedious, but in a great measure impertinent and useless. This book recovers the art and rules of logic. It focuses on thinking, reasoning, and judgment"--Book. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2009 APA, all rights reserved)
