How are the beliefs and behaviors of people influenced by others? For more than twenty years, Elliot Aronson's The Social Animal has been captivating readers by looking at the answers to this multifaceted question. Presenting the story of modern social psychology as a vivid, engaging narrative, Aronson has provided the most authoritative and accessible introduction to the field available. And by staying close to the real work of social psychologists, he ensures that each new edition incorporates the most important recent research and insights. The result: a classic - venerable yet vibrant. With this new edition, Aronson updates his examination of the patterns and motives of human behavior. Focusing on classic and contemporary studies on conformity, sexual attraction, politics, race relations, advertising, war, and scientific ethics, he incorporates much new information and understanding, including analyses of the Los Angeles riots, U.S. involvement in Somalia, the controversies over false memory and smokers' rights, and other front-page events. The Social Animal captures the creativity of scientific inquiry into human interaction. It draws readers into the excitement of social psychology while clearly explaining its fundamental principles and applications to everyday life

The Jigsaw classroom by Elliot Aronson( Book )

13 editions published between 1978 and 1997 in English and Japanese and held by 705 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Describing an innovative classroom technique, which seeks to place students in small interactive groups rather than in large groups around a teacher, this study provides guidelines for making cooperation and mutual trust a valuable and necessary by-product of education. The technique prescribes that each child be given a part of a topic to study, and the students then fit their pieces of the subject matter together to form a complete jigsaw picture. Objective scientific evidence for the efficacy of the technique is provided, and specific sections of the book deal with: (1) the formation of cooperative groups among students; (2) typical jigsaw classrooms; (3) special roles of the teacher and group leader; (4) development of communication skills; (5) problems the teacher will face; (6) research findings concerning the technique in action; and (7) cooperation as one part of the classroom experience. Appendices provide a teacher's guide and sample curriculum for multicultural social studies, an example of a teacher training workshop, and sample team-building exercises. References are also included. (Ds)

13 editions published between 2000 and 2013 in 4 languages and held by 34 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

On April 20, 1999, the halls of Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, reverberated with the sound of gunshots as two students, highly armed and consumed with rage, killed thirteen students and seriously injured twenty-three before turning the guns on themselves. It was the worst school massacre in out nation's history. Can we prevent a tragedy like this from happening again' In Elliot Aronson's Nobody Left to Hate, on of our nation's leading social psychologists argues that the negative atmosphere in our schools--the exclusion, taunting, humiliation, and bullying--played a major role in triggering the pathological behavior of the shooters. At the very least, such an atmosphere makes schools an unpleasant experience for most normal students. But it doesn't have to be. Nobody Left to Hate offers concise, practical, and easy-to-apply strategies for creating a more supportive, stimulating, and compassionate environment in our schools. Based on decades of scientific research and classroom testing, these strategies explain how students can be taught to control their own impulses, how to respect others, and how to resolve conflicts amicably. In addition, they show teachers how to structure classes to promote cooperation, rather than competition, without sacrificing academics. On the contrary, education is greatly enhanced. For parents, teachers, or anyone concerned with what is happening in our schools, Nobody Left to Hate provides a simple and effective plan of action that will make their children's school not only a safe place, but a more humane place of learning
