Um so erfreulicher ist es, daß ein so großer Teil der quantenmechanischen Resultate schon durch reine Symmetrieüberlegungen erhalten werden kann. Man hat gegen die gruppentheoi'etische Behandlung der Schrödingergleichung oft den Einwand erhoben, daß sie "nicht physikalisch" sei. Es scheint mir aber, daf$ die bewußte Aus nutzung elementarer Symmetrieeigenschaften dem physikalischen Gefühl eher entsprechen muß, als die mehr rechnerische Be handlung. Der erwähnte Einwand dürfte darauf zurückzuführen sein, daß die Gruppentheorie einen wesentlich anderen Charakter hat, als die dem Physiker hauptsächlich geläufigen Teile der Mathematik, so daß es immerhin einige Zeit erfordert, bis man sich mit ihr befreundet hat. Sie besteht nämlich aus einer großen Zahl unscheinbarer Schlüsse, die zwar einzeln betrachtet trivial, in ihrer Gesamtheit aber doch nicht so leicht zu über blicken sind. Deshalb hielt ich es schon im Interesse des ungeübten Lesers für ratsam, alle Zwischenüberlegungen nach Möglich keit explizite auszuführen. Um das richtige "sich zu Hause fühlen" im Gegenstand zu erleichtern, wurde vom mathema tischen Teil wesentlich mehr gebracht, als für die physikalischen VI Vorwort Anwendungen notwendig gewesen wäre.
