The Bibliotheca Universalis, or "Library of Everything" published by the physician and polymath, Conrad Gesner (1516-1565) when he was only twenty-five years old, represents the first attempt to organize all existing books in Latin, Greek, and Hebrew, though not books in vernacular tongues. It is the beginning of systematic bibliography. This volume, the first of a series of three, is organized by author. However, indicative of its pioneering role as an index of information, the arrangement is by authors' forenames with a reverse index of surnames-- not what we would expect today. The books are listed together with particulars of their various editions, and critical notes. Gesner included his own bio-bibliography in this work
