Aerodynamics: selected topics in the light of their historical development by
Theodore Von Kármán(
Book
)
36 editions published between 1954 and 2004 in English and Italian and held by 611 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The flight of birds has always challenged and dazzled the human mind, but man had to learn to fly the hard way. He had to construct for himself a science of aerodynamics instead of wings, as he once naively dreamed of doing. This book is an account of the development of that science since the time of Newton, but most particularly during the past fifty years of exciting discovery. Although many people are familiar with the spectacular improvements in airplanes that have taken place since the days of the Wright brothers, not so many persons are familiar with the behind-the-scenes struggles of engineers and physicists with problems of lift, drag, stability, aeroelasticity, and that collection of phenomena known as the sound barrier. Yet only our increasing understanding of the motion of the air and the forces that it exerts on objects moving in it has made possible the visible improvements in airplane design, performance, and safety. --book jacket

Prophecy fulfilled : "Toward new horizons" and its legacy(
Book
)
2 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 283 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Since the days of ancient warfare, commanders have relied on science and technology for success in war. Their use in military affairs increased dramatically after the Scientific and Industrial Revolutions, particularly in the nineteenth century. For example, chemists and metallurgists contributed greatly to World War I, while World War II is sometimes referred to as the physicists' war. During the fifty-year conflict known as the Cold War, scientists from diverse disciplines collaborated to multiply the effectiveness of military force and meet national security needs. Of all the federal organizations devoted to science and technology, none has been more important or influential than the U.S. Air Force's Scientific Advisory Board. In the midst of World War lithe Com- manding General of the Army Air Forces, Henry H. 'Hap' Arnold grasped the absolutely essential relationship between post-war science and national security. To realize his objective of inextricably linking science to air power, he called upon his friend, the brilliant Hungarian physicist Theodore von Karman, to assess and predict the future of military aeronautics. In Where We Stand and in Science, the Key to Air Supremacy, Karman and his hand-picked staff devised a multi-disciplinary approach to preserving the technical advantage gained by U.S. air power during the war. Both of these seminal reports are herein reprinted

The Impact on seaplane floats during landing by
Theodore Von Kármán(
)
4 editions published in 1929 in English and held by 136 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In order to make a stress analysis of seaplane floats, and especially of the members connecting the floats with the fuselage, it is of great importance to determine the maximum pressure acting on the floats during landing. A series of experiments have been carried out, both for model and full-scale floats. Results of model and full-scale experiments can be found in the English Reports and Memoranda Nos. 583, 683 and 926. In Germany, investigations have been made with full-size floats, mounted on a large impact pendulum. Recently in America the actual maximum pressures occurring during landering were obtained by means of a series of indicators located in the bottom of the float, each of which was set at a different maximum pressure reading

Standardization and aerodynamics by
William Knight(
)
2 editions published in 1923 in English and held by 135 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This set of articles and commentary written by various authors from different countries covers the topic of standardization in the field of aerodynamics. While each article was published at a different date by the publication Aerial Age, the set can almost be considered a print-version conversation between well-known minds working in the field of aerodynamics. One author raises a point, followed by commentaries contributed by others at a later date
