The five essays presented hereRhetoric, Style, Language, Conversation, andGreek Literaturewere published together for the first time inThe Collected Writings of Thomas De Quinceyin 18891890. Frederick Burwick brings the essays together again in this volume, introducing them by tracing the sources and development of a belletristic theory of rhetoric, which he says is one of the most original, and for a few critics, the most puzzling of the nineteenth century. Burwick makes the edition complete with a comprehensive index and a selected bibliography

On murder by Thomas De Quincey ( )
13 editions published between 2006 and 2009 in English and held by 1,072 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Thomas De Quincey's three essays 'On Murder Considered as One of the Fine Arts' centre on the notorious career of the murderer John Williams, who in 1811 brutally killed seven people in London's East End. De Quincey's response to Williams's attacks turns morality on its head, celebrating and coolly dissecting the art of murder and its perfections. Ranging from gruesomely vivid reportage and brilliantly funny satiric high jinks to penetrating literary and aesthetic criticism, the essays had a remarkable impact on crime, terror, and detective fiction, as well as on the rise of nineteenth-century decadence." "The volume also contains De Quincey's best-known piece of literary criticism, 'On the Knocking at the Gate in Macbeth', and his finest tale of terror, 'The Avenger', a disturbing exploration of violence, vigilantism, and religious persecution."--BOOK JACKET

Klosterheim:, or, The masque by Thomas De Quincey ( Book )
30 editions published between 1832 and 2011 in 3 languages and held by 443 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Written halfway between Confessions of an English opium-eater (1822) and the great, but fragmentary, Suspiria de profundis of the 1840s, Klosterheim is ostensibly a gothic fantasy in the manner of Ann Radcliffe, set in Germany during the Thirty Years' War. But De Quincey's gothic has a particular function, unlocking a door into the opium-taker's world of illusion and dream. He is writing at a period of desperate need and continuing addiction, and writing very well. Coleridge claimed to have read nothing since Quentin Durward that 'would compare in interest with Klosterheim', adding that De Quincey achieves a 'purity of style and idiom' to which Scott does not aspire."--Jacket
