Language : an introduction to the study of speech by Edward Sapir( Book )

267 editions published between 1921 and 2014 in 6 languages and held by 3,034 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book, first published in 1921, is intended as a basic introduction to linguistic science, especially for the layman. The introductory chapter defines language as a cultural function and as the possible basis of all thought. The elements of language are treated in sections on phonetics, words, grammatical concepts, and grammatical processes. Language is then presented from a historical point of view in chapters dealing with dialectal and grammatical shift, phonetic law, and word borrowings. A chapter on the "types of linguistic structure" gives a detailed discussion of the terms "inflection" and "agglutination," and offers a system for the classification of languages. Included also are a chapter on "language, race and culture," which asserts that there is no necessary connection among the three phenomena, and a final section on "language and literature." This book is available for $1.25 from harcourt, brace world, inc., 757 third avenue, new york city, N.Y. 10022. (rw)
Selected writings in language, culture and personality by Edward Sapir( Book )

114 editions published between 1949 and 2015 in 4 languages and held by 1,864 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Du site de l'éd.: Edward Sapir was one of those men, rare among scientists and scholars, who are spoken of by their colleagues in terms of genius. His writings on frontier problems in cultural anthropology, psychology, and linguistics are outstanding for their provocative insights and remarkable control of factual data. His long essay on language, his principal field of study, is an illuminating exploration of various aspects of the subject. His stress on the fact that language is a cultural or social product helped to make linguistics an integral part of the study of man. The interplay of culture and personality was a field where Sapir was a pioneer and many of his essays have become classics in the social sciences. The nine contributions brought together in this volume well show the distinction and lasting quality of Sapir's work. They include "Culture, Genuine and Spurious," "The Meaning of Religion," "Language," "Cultural Anthropology and Psychiatry," and "The Statue of Linguistics as a Science."

The psychology of culture : a course of lectures by Edward Sapir( Book )

40 editions published between 1993 and 2011 in English and Hungarian and held by 524 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This work presents Sapir's most comprehensive statement on the concept of culture, on method and theory in anthropology and other social sciences, on personality organization, and on the individual's place in culture and society. Extensive discussions of the role of language and other symbolic systems in culture, ethnographic method, and social interaction are also included. Ethnographic and linguistic examples are drawn from Sapir's fieldwork among North American Indians and from European and American society as well. Edward Sapir (1884-1939) was one of the leading figures in American anthropology and linguistics in the twentieth century, and he planned to publish a major theoretical statement on culture and psychology. He developed his ideas in a course of lectures he presented at Yale University in the 1930s, which attracted a wide audience from many social science disciplines. Unfortunately, he died before the book he had contracted to publish could be realized. Like de Saussure's Cours de Linguistique Generale before it, this work has been reconstructed from student notes, in this case 22 sets, as well as from Sapir's manuscript materials. Judith Irvine's meticulous reconstruction makes Sapir's compelling ideas - of surprisingly contemporary resonanceavailable for the first time
