Views on elementary reading instruction by International Reading Association( Book )

12 editions published between 1972 and 1974 in English and held by 401 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Presented are 11 papers (of the more than 50 delivered at the 1972 International Reading Association Convention) selected by a board of independent judges for their fresh insights, practical suggestions, and sound advice on reading instruction in the elementary school. Section one contains papers focusing on psycholinguistic and sociolingustic insights, some unfounded assumptions about disadvantaged children, and premises about urban school reading instruction. Section two highlights the importance of using a child's thoughts, language, and actions as a basis for teaching him to read and presents techniques and activities to use with the language experience approach. Section three touches on the affective dimension of reading--the importance of using pupil's interests as a means of involving them in reading and a sevenfold plan for individualizing reading instruction and, in doing so, showing concern for students' interests and attitudes. Section four contains two papers which deal with content reading--differences between narrative and expository styles as well as a review of selected literature pertaining to the research study skills. The last section focuses on the contributions paraprofessionals can make to a reading program. (Hod)

The second section, detailing the methods for tackling the problem of suicide, includes guidelines for schools, a note on confidentiality, student learning and the curriculum, peer counseling, tips for parents as partners, creating crisis intervention teams, networking with the community, basic intervention strategies, steps in the event of a tragedy, youth help model programs, and a listing of six sources of mental health and suicide information centers. The bibliography contains 22 references. (Km)
Transfer effects of training intermediate grade pupils to adjust reading speed to reading purpose by Theodore Lester Harris( Book )

2 editions published in 1966 in English and held by 55 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

An investigation was conducted to determine whether reading rate variability developed with short, tightly-constructed training materials would transfer to longer, more school-like passages immediately after training and one month later. The project was an extension of the usoe project 1755, "the experimental development of variability in rate of reading in the intermediate grades." The subjects were 72 children in madison, wisconsin--12 girls and 12 boys in each of grades four, five, and six--with reading scores between the 40th and 90th percentiles on the sequential tests of educational progress, the california achievement test, and the iowa reading test. During the orientation and training periods, group 1 worked with materials from which the main idea was deleted. Both groups worked with passages of identical length and essentially the same subject matter. Neither training method, sex, nor grade was significantly related to reading rate variability as defined and measured. However, data indicated that any reading rate variability existing after training was transferred and that flexibility could be taught in fourth grade. Samples of training materials, examiners' directions, orientation materials, tables figures, and references are included. Training procedures and materials are described. (Rh)
What to do if ... : a guide for parents of teenagers by Thomas C Barrett( Book )

3 editions published in 1990 in English and held by 31 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Parenting and growing up are both becoming increasingly difficult. Today's teenagers are faced with pressures new to this era, such as aids and easy drug availability. Other consequences of our technical, fast-changing society are manifested in increasing competition, conformity, and divorce. Characteristics of a normal, well-adjusted adolescent include the ability to care for others, handle stress, think logically, and enjoy life; a desire to succeed; and a general feeling of good physical health. Behaviors to watch out for include dramatic mood swings, self-isolation, a change in friends or habits, school problems, and depression. Major threats to teens can arise from stresses in the home (divorce, parents' substance abuse, family rules, and abusive behaviors); premature sexual activity; drug and alcohol abuse; eating disorders; and suicidal depression. Parents can help by keeping communication lines open, avoiding judgmental behavior, knowing when to seek help, and selecting a good counselor. Parents are further advised to spend time with their children before they become teenagers, develop relationships with parents who also have teenagers, monitor what's happening, and express their own values directly and clearly. Directory information for national hotlines concerning aids, substance abuse, dropouts, delinquency, runaways, and suicide are provided. (11 references) (mlh)
