For nearly 30 years, in his role as editorial-page writer on the Washington Post, Alan Barth was a strong and eloquent voice in support of individual rights in America. This splendid collection shows Mr. Barth's undiminished force on such important issues as freedom of speech, desegration, gun control, law enforcement, and McCarthyism. He was a vocal opponent of the retrenchment of civil liberties at home in the name of Communism abroad. He critized government agencies for their wiretapping activities and their use of anonymous informers in loyalty-security cases. He was an articulate defender of the First Amendment, believing that the right to read or look at whatever material interested a citizen was an integral characteristic of intellectual freedom. And he upheld the primacy of individual rights when they came into conflict with the needs or wants of law enforcement or pubilc opinion. Alan Barth's shining belief in the power of real democracy, of common sense and fairness to all, of constitutional principles, impelled him to a deeply convincing expression of the classic American liberal faith- an inspiration for our own times. -- Publisher description

Approximately one-half of the Durr Papers reflect the activities of his personal life, but Durr's government activities in the Reconstruction Finance Corporation (RFC) are contained as well. The RFC provided loans to railraods, banks, agricultural agencies, industry, and commerce in order to help restore the economy. The collection also contains materials from 1940-1941 on an RFC subsidiary, the Defense Plant Corporation (DPC). The latter agency was created in 1940 to handle the conversion and expansion of industry to prepare for war with Germany and Japan. Materials on the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) are included for the period in which Durr served as commissioner, 1941-1948. The beginnings of education broadcasting in the U.S. is covered as is the Eugene Cox affair. The FCC regulatory policies and procedures for wartime and peace-time broadcasting are contained, as are materials related to the House Committee on Un-American Activities from 1941-1951. In the personal life and private practice series are materials related to the 1954 U.S. Senate Internal Security subcommittee hearings held in New Orleans, La., on the Southern Conference Educational Fund, which involved both Clifford and Virginia Durr, and on the civil rights movement in the South from 1954-1969. Durr served as counsel in a number of civil rights cases during that period
