By women possessed : a life of Eugene O'Neill by Arthur Gelb( Book )

5 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 556 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Celebrated for their books on Eugene O'Neill and enjoying access to a trove of previously sealed archival material, the Gelbs deliver their final volume on the stormy life and brilliant oeuvre of this Nobel Prize-winning American playwright. This is a tour through both a magical moment in American theater and the troubled life of a genius. Not a peep show or a celebrity gossip fest, this book is a brilliant investigation of the emotional knots that ensnared one of our most important playwrights. Handsome, charming when he wanted to be, O'Neill was the flame women were drawn to--all, that is, except his mother, who never let him forget he was unwanted. By Women Possessed follows O'Neill through his great successes, the failures he was able to shrug off, and the long eclipse, a twelve-year period in which, despite the Nobel, nothing he wrote was produced. But ahead lay his greatest achievements: The Iceman Cometh and Long Day's Journey into Night. Both were ahead of their time and both received lukewarm receptions. It wasn't until after his death that his widow, the keeper of the flame, began a fierce and successful campaign to restore his reputation. The result is that today, just over 125 years after his birth, O'Neill is a towering presence in the theater, his work--always in performance here and abroad--still electrifying audiences. Perhaps of equal importance, he is the acknowledged father of modern American theater, the man who paved the way for the likes of Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, Edward Albee, and a host of others. But, as Williams has said, at a cost: 'O'Neill gave birth to the American theater and died for it'"--

Motivation for participation in continuing library education by Joe Frank Dahlstrom( Book )

1 edition published in 1982 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The purpose of this study was to determine the factors motivating librarians to participate in continuing education. A questionnaire to accomplish this task was developed through the use of the Delphi Technique. The questionnaire was administered to a random sample of 550 librarians throughout the southwestern United States. The data collected resulted in the identification of twenty-two factors that are motivators for at least some segments of the population. Through multiple regression, the data were used to test a model proposed by Grotelueschen and Caulley for predicting future participation in continuing education. This model did not prove to be a valid predictor for the library profession on the population sampled. To place the motivational factors identified in this study in the context of motivational literature, the concluding chapter views the factors in terms of Maslow's hierarchy of needs; Houle's goal-oriented, activity-oriented, and learning-oriented types of participation; and Herzberg's motivators and hygiene factors. Those seven items which were shown to be significant when compared with past participation in group activities and with anticipated future participation, and were additionally identified as Herzberg motivators, were determined to be the strongest motivational factors for the library profession as a whole. These are: (1) Intellectual challenge and stimulation, (2) Gaining a greater sense of competence, (3) Improvement of professional service, (4) Better service to clients, (5) Increasing one's specialized skill, (6) Commitment of the profession to continuing education, and (7) Personal commitment to continuing education

An assessment of industry's training resources and their desired involvement with educational institutions in the southwestern region of the United States by Katherine Ellen Moser( Book )

1 edition published in 1984 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

With an increasing amount of attention focused on productivity in the United States, industry is involved in an effort to provide training for employees. A concern which top management in industry must face is what avenues will most effectively address this issue. As cooperation between industry and postsecondary institutions increases, more information on how educational institutions could have a greater impact on organizational development is needed. The study explores important questions about what training resources are being utilized and which training sources are perceived to be most effective by training managers. The sample population included members of the southwestern region of the professional organization, the American Society of Training and Development, who were training managers. The response rate was 71.6%. The study contains responses from training managers in four general areas: personal information, such as educational level and salary; information on training staff size and functions, including how training budgets are alloted; and to what extent company training managers are willing to utilize various structures provided by educational institutions. Training resources in the area of professional development for 1980, 1983 and 1986 are reported. Findings show the vast majority of dollars being spent for technical training, or training which relate to a specific job-related task. Future projections indicate a continuation of this practice. What structures training managers expect educational institutions to provide are examined. Structures such as seminars, workshops and customized courses are rated as the most preferred by training managers. However, training managers' substantially prefer in-house training over educational institutions as service providers. Relationships among specific variables such as the educational level of training managers and their willingness to use educational institutions is examined. Finally, questions for future research in related areas are raised and recommendations suggested. Investigators are advised against making unqualified assumptions about the importance of and relationships among variables central to this study
