Rien n'est libre à l'hôtel du village où il s'est arrêté et on lui indique l'adresse de quelqu'un qui ne refusera sûrement pas de l'héberger. En effet, son hôte, un très vieux monsieur, l'invite même à dîner avec lui et ses trois amis. Aimerait-il participer aussi à leur jeu? Chaque soir, ils exercent à nouveau pour se distraire leur profession de naguère. Ils sont juge, procureur, avocat et bourreau, mais l'accusé manque. Traps accepte le rôle d'autant plus volontiers que le repas se révèle un festin à lʹancien bien fait pour réjouir son âme de bon vivant. Par contre, il ne voit pas pour quel crime on pourrait le juger. Sa vie est toute innocence, à quelques peccadilles près -- exemplaire dans sa banalité. Il est aveugle à cette évidence que nul sur terre n'est en droit de se dire les mains nettes
