Universals : an opinionated introduction by D. M Armstrong( Book )

13 editions published between 1989 and 2010 in English and Undetermined and held by 507 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The author turns his attention to one of the oldest and most fundamental philosophical problems of all: How it is that we are able to sort and classify different things as being of the same natural class? Professor Armstrong carefully sets out six major theories--ancient, modern, and contemporary--and assesses the strengths and weaknesses of each. Recognizing that there are no final victories or defeats in metaphysics, Armstrong nonetheless defends a traditional account of universals as the most satisfactory theory we have."--Publisher

A world of states of affairs by D. M Armstrong( Book )

24 editions published between 1997 and 2009 in English and German and held by 462 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this important study David Armstrong offers a comprehensive system of analytical metaphysics that synthesizes but also develops his thinking over the last twenty years. Armstrong's analysis, which acknowledges the 'logical atomism' of Russell and Wittgenstein, makes facts (or states of affairs, as the author calls them) the fundamental constituents of the world, examining properties, relations, numbers, classes, possibility and necessity, dispositions, causes and laws. All these, it is argued, find their place and can be understood inside a scheme of states of affairs. This is a comprehensive and rigorously this-worldly account of the most general features of reality, argued from a distinctive philosophical perspective, and it will appeal to a wide readership in analytical philosophy
Truth and truthmakers by D. M Armstrong( Book )

20 editions published between 2004 and 2007 in English and held by 427 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Truths are determined not by what we believe, but by the way the world is. Or so realists about truth believe. Philosophers call such theories correspondence theories of truth. Truthmaking theory, which now has many adherents among contemporary philosophers, is the most recent development of a realist theory of truth, and in this book D.M. Armstrong offers the first full-length study of this theory. He examines its applications to different sorts of truth, including contingent truths, modal truths, truths about the past and the future, and mathematical truths. In a clear, even-handed and non-technical discussion he makes a compelling case for truthmaking and its importance in philosophy. His book marks a significant contribution to the debate and will be of interest to a wide range of readers working in analytical philosophy
The mind-body problem : an opinionated introduction by D. M Armstrong( Book )

9 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 354 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The relation of mind to body has been argued about by philosophers for centuries. The Mind-Body Problem: An Opinionated Introduction presents the problem as a debate between materialists about the mind and their opponents. After examining the views of Descartes, Hume, and Thomas Huxley the debate is traced through the twentieth century to present day. The emphasis is always on the arguments used and the way one position develops from another. By the end of the book the reader is afforded both a grasp of the state of the controversy and how we got there."--Jacket
Dispositions : a debate by D. M Armstrong( Book )

20 editions published between 1996 and 2014 in English and held by 302 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

'Why did the window break when it was hit by the stone? Because the window is brittle and the stone is hard; hardness and brittleness are powers, dispositional properties or dispositions.'. Dispositions are essential to our understanding of the world. This book is a record of the debate on the nature of dispositions between three distinguished philosophers - D.M. Armstrong, C.B. Martin and U.T. Place - who have been thinking about dispositions all their working lives. Their distinctive accounts cover many of the issues surrounding dispositions such as the nature of mind, matter, universals, existence, laws of nature and causation. Dispositions illuminates this central topic in analytic philosophy and at the same time highlights deeper concerns of metaphysics
Sketch for a systematic metaphysics by D. M Armstrong( Book )

20 editions published between 2010 and 2016 in English and Italian and held by 279 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"David Armstrong sets out his metaphysical system in a set of concise and lively chapters each dealing with one aspect of the world. He begins with the assumption that all that exists is the physical world of space-time. On this foundation he constructs a coherent metaphysical scheme that gives plausible answers to many of the great problems of metaphysics. He gives accounts of properties, relations, and particulars; laws of nature; modality; abstract objects such as numbers; and time and mind."--Jacket
Universals and scientific realism by D. M Armstrong( Book )

35 editions published between 1978 and 1988 in 3 languages and held by 98 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Phenomenological realism versus scientific realism : Reinhardt Grossmann - David M. Armstrong, metaphysical correspondence by Reinhardt Grossmann( Book )

2 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 13 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The two eminent metaphysicians Armstrong and Grossmann exchanged letters for ten years in which they discussed crucial points of their respective ontologies. They have a common basis where both do metaphysics proper and not linguistic philosophy, and both advocate universals and acknowledge the key position of the category of states of affairs. However, they differ on the simplicity of universals and the nature of states of affairs. There is also a fundamental methodological disagreement between them. Armstrong accepts only the evidence of natural science and has a materialist view in mind, while Grossmann is a dualist and grants also the same evidential status to the phenomenological data of perception and introspection. The letters are grouped into three phases. The first is the issue of universals; the second, the ontological analysis of laws of nature; and the third, the ontology of numbers. The book also contains comments and reviews, partly not published until now."--Publisher's website
