The life and public services of Henry Clay, down to 1848 by Epes Sargent( Book )

54 editions published between 1852 and 1974 in English and held by 637 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Political biography of Henry Clay (1777-1852), an American statesman and orator who belonged to the Whig political party. This biography tells much of the national history in the early nineteenth century. "The editor, in revising the work of Mr. Sargent, has taken the responsibility of omitting or modifying some passages which involved harsh judgments of those political brethren who, at one time or another, have seen fit to prefer some other Whit to Mr. Clay as a candidate for the Presidency. He did not perceive that these judgments bore any property relation to Mr. Clay's character or career, while their reproduction would tend to revive feuds and heart-burnings now happily laid to rest." (P. 5)
