The social psychology of the epileptic child by Christopher Bagley( Book )

19 editions published between 1971 and 2017 in English and held by 481 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

When this title was first published in 1971, there were about 300, 000 people with epilepsy in England and Wales. Nearly one-third of them were children. This book is an integrated review of how epileptic children behaved, and of how they were regarded by parents, teachers and peers at the time. Written by a sociologist with a training in psychology, human biology and education, the book draws on several disciplines sociology, psychology, biology in seeking to understand the complex determinants of deviant behaviour in children with epilepsy. The author considers in detail the lives of 118 epileptic children, bringing together and analysing a wide range of measurements of behaviour, social relations and abnormalities of brain function. He discusses how the children fare in school, and how epilepsy affects both the teachers perception of the child and the childs scholastic performance. The dearth of medical centres which could diagnose and treat epilepsy at the time is examined, and hospital use according to parents social class is analysed. The author looks at the role of parents of epileptic children and shows that their attitude to epilepsy is of major importance for the childs adjustment. The prejudice to which epileptic children and adolescents were subjected by the world at large is chronicled in detail. Finally the author considers how his empirical material makes a contribution to the theoretical problem of integrating sociology, psychology and biology into a single discipline concerned with the explanation of human social behaviour

Race and education across cultures by Gajendra K Verma( Book )

8 editions published in 1975 in English and held by 402 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The various scholars who contribute in the three broad sections in this volume orient their papers toward revealing the diverse forms and functions of race and education across cultures. They highlight the conditions in analyses of Britain, Australia, and the United States. The rationale behind the structure of the symposium provides a forum in which readers with different biases can discuss the issues or race relations by formulating new questions about social situations and human acts. In light of the variations involved in intergroup relations, one of the criteria in organizing the material is to focus on the possible relationships among differing racial, ethnic, and social groups in societies of the world today. In order to capture the diversity offered by the work of experts in this area, a framework in the form of brief opening passages at the beginning of each section is provided. A selected bibliography to these issues is appended to each introduction. The book neither pretends to deal with the science of race relations as a whole nor claims to settle the controversy which exists in the area of race and education. There are three biases: toward the academic approach of social psychology; towards empirical studies; and toward radical conceptualizations from these studies. The three major sections are as follows: intellect and achievement; attitudes, personality, and behavior; and curriculum studies. (Author/AM)

10 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 244 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"International Perspectives on Educational Diversity and Inclusion is presenting accounts of attempts to include diverse ethnic and social groups, and children with special needs within inclusive educational systems. Different countries, all at different stages of development with contrasted minority populations, face these issues of policy and practice with varying degrees of success. The book should provide insights into modern concepts of globalization and its impact on educational policy for students of sociology, comparative education and psychology. Readers will learn how the educational inclusion of diverse ethnic and social groups has received setbacks in America, has rarely been achieved in Britain and some European countries, and is still struggling to be achieved in India."--Jacket
