Easeful death : is there a case for assisted dying? by Mary Warnock( )

17 editions published between 2008 and 2009 in English and held by 2,147 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Drawing on experience in the Netherlands, Belgium, and the US state of Oregon, where either assisted suicide or euthanasia have been legalized, Mary Warnock and Elisabeth Macdonald explore the philosophical, medical, and ethical views on both sides, to form an important contribution to the ongoing debate. They examine how a range of proposals would affect different members of society, from the very young to the very old, and consider too the practical decisions doctors have to make, with sensitive descriptions of the medical processes of palliative care, self-denial of food and water, and methods of assisted dying and euthanasia. Ultimately, the authors conclude that the public is ready to embrace a more compassionate approach to assisted suicide, provided it is carefully managed and monitored. The legalisation of euthanasia, they argue, will take longer, for it requires more confidence and experience than we currently have."--Jacket

The main ideas and their transformations within the domain of moral philosophy since the beginning of this century receive a lucid and discriminating exposition in this book for both student and general reader. The author first outlines problems that have been of deepest concern in England and the United States and on the Continent since Berkeley and Hume demolished Cartesianism, and then analyzes in some detail the responses of influential modern thinkers to these problems. Writings, taken in chronological order, have been selected from the many books and articles on ethics as those likely to be lastingly important, and many quotations are included

13 editions published between 2002 and 2011 in English and held by 589 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The development of new reproductive technologies has raised urgent questions and debates about how and by whom these treatments should be controlled. On the one hand individuals and groups have claimed access to assisted reproduction as a right, and some have also claimed that this access should be available free of charge. As well as clinically infertile heterosexual couples, this right has been claimed by single women, gay couples, post-menopausal women, and couples who wish to delay having children for various reasons. Others have argued that a desire to have children does not make it a huma

Women philosophers( Book )

17 editions published between 1996 and 1997 in English and Undetermined and held by 418 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This exciting book brings together four hundred years of women's philosophical writing, representing famous thinkers from Wollstonecraft and Martineau to De Beauvoir and Murdoch and giving voice to a host of less celebrated - but equally significant - figures. The scope and ambition of their collective enterprise is astonishing, ranging far beyond narrowly defined 'women's issues' to the most fundamental questions of being and ethics, the most challenging problems of language and identity." "Often surprising, always stimulating, Women Philosophers' restores women to their rightful place at the very heart of the philosophical debate. More than this, it raises the intriguing question of whether there has been - whether there ever can be - any such thing as a distinctively 'feminine' philosophy."--BOOK JACKET
The uses of philosophy by Mary Warnock( Book )

16 editions published between 1992 and 1993 in English and held by 378 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
